SOCIAL MEDIA MINIGAME
SOCIAL MEDIA MINIGAME
A few months ago, I created a highly interactive Social Media Minigame for my story, Ghost of a Chance . The game lets the reader view someone’s Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, and tap on all assets, including photos, stories, posts, headers, etc. and open them into new windows, just like they would irl.
I have finally managed to put together a tutorial on how to make your own! Be warned - this game will take some work on your part to create all the photos and p…
REMEMBERING A TATTOO CHOICE
Because tattoos are part of outfits instead of the character, if you have three different tattoo options you will have to create each outfit three times, with the different variations. From there, I would use character points (you would need to make a character called TATTOO, or just assign it to the actual character themselves). It would look something like:
NARRATOR
What tattoo should CHARACTER have?
choice “Tattoo 1” {
@TATTOO +1
} “Tattoo 2” {
@TATTOO +2
} “Tattoo 3” {
@TATTOO …
GENDER CHOICE TUTORIAL
It’s not nearly as hard as it looks. I have two gender customizable LIs, and readers can choose to be straight (two male LIs), gay (two female LIs), or bisexual (one male LI and one female LI), so that works out to three branches. I write all my dialogue first, and any time I use pronouns for either LI I write it as -he/she-. I also use gender neutral names, so I don’t have to go through and change these.
When I’m ready to code, I code the straight branch first since the male LIs are physically…
CHOICES WITHIN BRANCHES
Hey, so if I’m understanding correctly, you have multiple branches the reader can play based on points, and you want to know if they can somehow switch to a new branch because of a choice, even when they have already begun one?
If that is what you’re getting at, then definitely (if you code it that way)! Let’s say you have three endings - MC ends up with CHARACTER 1, MC ends up with CHARACTER 2, MC ends up with no one. It really depends on what the action that triggers the ending is, but I woul…
LIMB OVERLAYS WITH CC
I personally don’t care for CC, but a lot of readers do and if you don’t offer it, most it your fanmail will be full of people asking for it (that’s exactly what happened to me in my first story).
In my current story, I allow the readers to fully CC the MC and two LIs, but I make it very clear I use a lot of hand and arm overlays. I make my overlays in three different shades per character, and highlight the shades that match. I find this gives the readers a wider range of CC options, while stil…
MOVING CHARACTERS IN SYNC WITH OVERLAYS
Of course! All you have to do is get the characters to “walk” in sync with the taxi, even though they’ll be sitting the whole time.
What I do when coding something like this is place the taxi in a starting position. Let’s say that position is spot 100 100 in zone 1. Then you’ll place your characters in their starting position as well, let’s say spot 80 80 in zone 1.
Then you’ll move the taxi to it’s finishing position, let’s say spot 100 100 in zone 2. Do the same for the characters, ie. spot …
MAZE/ESCAPE MINIGAME
Hey! This wouldn’t be very complicated. If I were you, I would get three tappable arrow overlays and put them on either side and the top of the screen (Dara’s dressing game arrows would work for the sides, just make sure to credit her). You will have to duplicate and turn one of these arrows to make it face the third direction. Then I would have a speech bubble say something like:
NARRATOR
You are entering a minigame! Tap the arrows to run the right way, or get sent back to the start.
label …
GENERAL TIPS + ADVICE FROM LOTS OF OTHER FORUM USERS
There’s a lot of great advice on this thread. In addition, I think it’s really important to go into it determined. I’m not going to lie to you, coding is way harder than it looks when you start. Eventually though, it becomes easier than it looks. It’s all just a matter of being determined, sticking to it, and working to improve your skills. You probably aren’t going to be amazing off the bat, and that’s okay. I only started coding in May and I remember crying out of frustration at the most basic…
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN & AND @
Of course!
& is used when you want multiple things to happen at one time, but you don’t want it to stop the flow of the story. Essentially, you can have one character talking or doing an animation, while another character, or camera, or overlay is doing something else. Here’s a random example from my story:
[Screen Shot 2020-12-29 at 5.36.37 PM]
So in this screenshot, I have a few characters having a conversation. In the first part, when the doctor stops talking, I want her doing an idle ani…
LIMB OVERLAYS
I do this fairly often in my story. It’s all just tricks of the eye. Here are two examples where I used different strategies:
[IMG_3342]
In this one, I wanted it to look like Lila was sitting on the floor with her legs up. In reality, the character is standing, but it is at the bottom of the screen so her legs are cut off, and I uploaded an overlay of her legs up to her chest so it looks like she is sitting.

Here I have Emily standing holding a teapot. I actually have her doing …
REMEMBERING A CHOICE WHEN YOU SKIP A CHAPTER
What everyone else is saying is correct, and if you want choices to be remembered they will have to play through the chapter. However, if it is just one major choice they have to make (as opposed to every choice earning the reader points), you can always do something like:
NARRATOR
Have you already played this episode?
choice “Yes.” {
NARRATOR
Do you want to replay or skip this episode?
choice “Replay.” {
goto episode_start
} “Skip.” {
NARRATOR
Remind me, who did MAIN CHARACTE…
I’ll continue to update this post as I think of other tutorials I’ve written.

Hi so I am a beginner! and I have been finding backgrounds to upload on Pinterest but as a long-time fan of the app, I realize that some backgrounds and overlays need to be credited. What do I do if I can not find who created it? I just want to make sure that my first story goes smoothly:)

either find who made the orginal background or not use the bg
What about background photos that were just taken off the web?
Hey!
So I am a beginner and if someone can help on how can u make written overlays fly into the screen. I would be grateful

This is so nice.
I need a run down on overlays. For example, throwing an axe or something.
