Oh :no_mouth: You too huh? When I saw this topic, I was like… Oh I want in too  Before it gets too aggressive here of course

Hey! Not trying to cause any issues or nothing, I’m just so confused. So… if my character has one of the new African American hairstyles, is it required that somewhere in the script I have to state it’s from black culture? I get the whole, “make sure you don’t let the white character claim it as their own” and I totally get that! 100% But if I make a white character and literally no where through out the story is the mention of her hair, is it okay? Or do I have to somehow put it in that it’s black culture?
Not trying to cause anything, just wanna know.

No, love, you don’t have to provide a black history lesson with every black hairstyle you use. You probably will get backlash (a lot of black people are sensitive on this topic), but it comes with the territory of being an author. If the hairstyle is acknowledged, address it as “cornrows” or “braids” or “bantu knots” (whatever hairstyle you choose, must have it’s proper name) not “Bjork mini buns” or “Bo Welch tiny braids.” Anyone whose reasonable won’t take issue with this. Good luck!

Okay thank you, also who tf calls it “Bjork mini buns” or “Bo Welch tiny braids” omfg :joy: Made me laugh!

Yes, you need to acknowledge the hairstyle and say it’s apart of black culture and your character is expressing it. Atleast put a little reader message that it is. Along with a little history maybe.

Or even have a (black) friend of hers that she (respectfully) admires
They can have a slumber party ans ur character can express the like for her friends hair.
At which point the MCs bestie can give a breif explination on her hair
And can do MC hair(in a similar way loosely curled way)

Also make them actual friends none of tht “i can wear this hair cuz i have a black friend junk”

Yes, I thought so. And I’m sorry girl. But I am mad right now. What the f**** is this ?

I’m not talking about the racist part but about the “Vikings are savages”. Are you serious ???

This might not be racist but this is f****ing offensive and disrespectful !

It is ! You can’t call a whole culture and a whole population “savages” !

Seriously, all the characteristics of Vikings show they were savages. If you get offended, that’s all on you.

So you can get offended when white people get an haircut but I can’t get offended when you have the same discriminatory attitude that white people had towards black people, when they wanted to belittle them ?
