I think calling braids or dreads or Bantu knots “their creations” is where you get into sticky territory
Have you ever found yourself annoyed when a kid in school copies your style and then claims they had it first? Imagine that times 10000
I agree and I have no problem telling the readers that the hairstyle was inspired by a black person’s braids xx
This gives me a good idea for a character
You don’t need to say it bluntly! As I said, a little “I LOVE [place black woman here]’s style to I’m gonna try it” can be enough!
I think it’s complicated by the fact that hairstyles don’t escape systemic racism. For example, there are schools in the US that have banned students from having afros because of white-centric standards of what’s “professional” or “appropriate.” If those hairstyles are then worn by white people and become viewed as “cute” or “trendy” without any recognition of where they come from, it is not going to contribute anything to ending the anti-black biases that led to the banning of those hairstyles in the first place.
I think that it’s a hairstyle and that we need to acknowledge what culture it’s from and that if you like it and you wanna get it and u think that you rock it then SLAY and if u don’t then don’t SAY that you don’t like it, and no ones forcing you to get it. Maybe you just aren’t as interested in whatever culture that is! No need to be rude about it, and if you like it, then be proud of the culture for being amazing, different, and unique. Because not 1 other culture has that (most likely)
Y’all refuse to get it. No one gives other races flack for cultural appropriation. Why do people get angry when it’s us? Do you lot just hate black people? Because I’m sick of your trolling, telling us to “get over it” “it’s just a hairstyle”
You don’t have to put it bluntly. As I said before, you can do it passively as well. The significance won’t change.
People in school used to call my white friend with braids “a white Alicia Keys”. It was enough for me
I’d go for the most common demoninator. People are always going to be offended, but aim for the reasonable people. Reasonable people wanna be recognised
You not knowing the history and why it is important, is why you shouldn’t partake. If you don’t even want to understand why something is so sensitive to a culture of people, don’t partake in their traditions/culture.
Not sure if that’s funny or mean
Alicia Keys is gorgeous so definitely a compliment
People will always be offended. Guess what? Ignore them, dear, and do as you please.
That’s true
You’re either appropriating or appreciating it. I’d prefer you to appreciate it
See what I said about the claiming thing? This is exactly what I mean.
omg I hate the stereotypes put on cultures it’s actually so annoying and everyone rn is using the stereotypes. If you got a hairstyle from a African American culture, and your English, then be proud, and if your African American and you get a hairstyle that originated in an English culture, then be proud of the culture! We should acknowledge the cultures and be proud we have them, because if there was a world where we all looked the same then it would be so damn boring, these cultures are what put unique in humans.
Dude! Exactly the same! My dad is black, but I’m very very pale. mostly cause I don’t go outside, either…and my SUPER health decline X’DDDD
I’m so glad I’m not the only one T.T I hate it when people see me, then my dad and they’re like “That’s not your real dad?” Or “You’re adopted??!” No…I’m part eggplant. Leave me alone X’DDDD
