Agreed.

Smoking is unfortunate, but if a story showed 100% positive and happy things, it wouldnā€™t have much of a plot. Smoking can be a plot device to show plenty of mostly negative characteristics, like carelessness or apathy (ie. for oneā€™s health), a tendency toward addictive behaviour, rebelliousness, etcetera.
