I’ll try to clear some things up, since a lot of people seem to be confused ~ Do keep in mind that these are all from my own understanding, so it might be a bit off.

  • You can use the original version of any fairytale, but not any remakes. For example, you can do The Brother’s Grimm Cinderella, but not Disney’s. Modern adaptations like Frozen (The Snow Queen) or Moana (Various Polynesian myths) wouldn’t be allowed, since the central stories are copyrighted, and they stray so far from the originals that they’re basically their own stories.

  • Myths are allowed, but general characters from said myths (i.e. using the general concept of Prometheus and not the story of how Prometheus stole fire) is not allowed.

  • On the same note, the general concept of fantastical creatures are not allowed, but stories featuring fantastic creatures, say, the Little Mermaid, are allowed.

  • Literature such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and Romeo and Juliette is not allowed.

Would The Ugly Duckling count? Like instead of a duck, A high schooler girl, or boy if you like to see it that way, is going through high school, with braces, pimples and zits lining his/her face, always wearing clothes with their shirt tucked in or a bad combination of clothes that make them look old. A few years after graduating, they’re successful, their teeth are straight and face clear. That’s the best I could describe the human version of The Ugly Duckling.

I suppose it would be beneficial for me to have a poll, since I’m indecisive, haha ~

I think you just inadvertently insulted every kid ever.
Pimples and braces don’t make a person ugly. Their behaviour does!

Do you know if we would have to use the names from the original fairy tale?

So… I’m not really gonna join, but with a fairytales contest I imagined something like creating your own fairytale or using creatures from fairytales/folk tales… simple ole me still can’t really imagine how you adapt stories from original stories, but we’ll see I guess…

 I’m sorry. I just thought of like the whole nerdy type of kid where puberty didn’t work in their favor. I’m sorry for whoever I insulted the way I described the ugly duckling. Ok, scratch the ugly duckling. How about Little Red Riding Hood mixed with real world problems little girls go through? Like the wolf being some predatory human who has some sick fetish with the girl and the huntsman being a cop? That’s better?

Most likely not, for example spin-offs like ‘Once Upon a Time’ or ‘a Cinderella Story’ allude to the fairytale, but don’t say it explicitly :)

That’s kind of the point of the fairy tale- the ducklings hat made fun of the ‘ugly’ duckling grew up to be ugly ducks, but the ugly duckling became a beautiful swan <3
