Okay, so I’m going to quote Melani repsonse to questions, just to help, so I wont have to keep on scrolling to find it, so while I’m planning, this will help.

Please feel free to adapt fairytales from your culture! Even if the characters aren’t globally known, this is still an adaptation and will be counted for the contest.

There’s no restriction on the contest for how well-known the tale is, and this will not affect you in judging.

Shakespeare’s works would not qualify as folk or fairy tales, sorry!

Santa would qualify, as he is the subject of plenty of cultural folktales, and is a public domain character!

Multiple stories’ elements, including characters can be in your plot!

In the contest rules, we clarified that authors must adapt stories and characters in the public domain, which are free for all to use due to their lack of copyright status. Our plagiarism guidelines apply to copyrighted works and intellectual properties outside of the public domain, which is why we specified that these stories cannot be copies of things like Disney Movies, or other popular retellings of fairy tales.

We also encourage you to put original spins onto these stories to make them your own! While we can draw inspiration from copyright free sources, your creativity is what makes it a good original adaptation.

Feel free to get totally out there with it if you’d like! Do you want Goldilocks to be a nosy real estate agent instead of a lost little girl? Do it! Do you want to write a team up between two princesses who bond over their evil stepmothers? It’s all you! Adaptations are all about taking the recognizable and adding your own spice.

To clarify: Your stories must take elements from existing Fairy Tale stories, whether that is characters or the plot.

Ideas and tropes, such as vampires or mermaids or a “fairytale romance” are not an adaption of a story, but finding a folk tale about a mermaid and writing your own version of it would qualify for this contest.

To answer the “What Qualifies as a Fairy Tale” question: Any culture’s fictional folk tales will be classified as a fairy tale for this contest. Stories should be adaptations that use identifiable characters or plotlines, but can be molded into original works.

Are we aloud to use disney films as the original fairytale/ the inspiration for the story but change it a lot so it’s very different from the original film?

For example; the original story is Rapunzel but the episode story is about a girl who has magic that when she sings she can heal others (not her hair, not long hair, no Flynn rider, etc)
(This is just an example not my idea)
Or like show white but instead of her being a princess with a evil stepmother, she’ll be a celebrity with an evil manager or something

I am thinking of writing a Cinderella story, this is my idea:
When she was young, her mother died. 6 months after her death, her father got married to another woman who has two daughters in her earlier marriage. The woman mistreat the MC. Her father doesn’t care about her. One day, the king announced that there will be a choosing of a bride for the prince. There will be 20 girls, who will live in the palace, and those girls will be giving a task to fulfill, if they fail that task they will go home. Te MC and the stepsisters are part of the girls.
What do you guys think about it?
