I’m planning to have a female indian character in my story, so i want to know some stereotypes against indians to avoid
Yes, there are many actually, like super religious, super smart, nerdy, doesn’t speak english well… if you search for it you’ll definitelly find more
A big one is indians having strict parents, forcing their kids to be smart, nerdy, etc. Good luck on your story!!
definitely strict parents, forcing kids to be doctors/engineers/lawyers, really smart kids, intense pressure to be the best, bad english, really religious, all speak the Hindi language, and that we speak to snakes? (idk why the last one is a stereotype ;-; )
hey there…I find it cool…u know about india…but all indians dont speak hindu language…there are a lot of languages in India, and its not imp. that all indians have bad eng.,…uhhmmmm…and that religious part isnt true…also… yeah…parents pressure thier child to be the best…but its in a good way…hope…I am not being rude or something
Okay now, here are some true and false stereotypes about indians
-
Indians have a bad english- Which isn’t completely true. First off, English was never the native language of India. And neither was it a very popular language in Asia. It was only after the 1830’s that English reached India after the arrival of the British.
-
Indians worship a million gods- Well, India is an extremely diverse country but most people not belonging to India believe that all the people of India are “Hindu”, no, they’re not. Hindu or more particularly, “Hinduism” is just a religion practiced by a major population of India. But apart from this, there are many other religions practiced in India- Islam, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism etc.
Coming to the point now, yes, “Hindus” do worship a lot of gods. -
Indians have strict parents- Depends on the thinking of the parents. There’s a general acceptance in India that strict parenting leads to good outcomes. And it actually works a ton of times
nah you’re fine, I’m an American with Indian parents so these were stereotypes i heard/grew up with. I know India doesn’t just speak Hindi; I speak a little Malayalam actually .
okay…good to know
i dont think any of these are completely true okay?
some parents can be strict about their child to study well.
And duhh Indians speak English tooo well…no doubt.
The biggest problem/stereotype that I see Authors on Episode follow is that if the character is an Indian, put a dark skin tone. Don’t do that. Because us Indians not only have dark skin tone but the fairest and medium skin tones as well. I’d just say the Rose skin tones aren’t the Indian skin tones, other than that you can use any other tones from the fair/fairest to the dark/darkest Also, us Indians do wear sarees, kurtas but not everyday. It really depends on what kind of culture or tradition the person’s family follow. In rural areas (villages and small towns) ladies do wear sarees majorly but if you look at the remaining population we’re just like any other people and we wear Jeans, Tops, Crop tops, shorts and whatever that’s available on the portal. We just request not to mix the Indian styled blouses and sarees with other outfits
Actually some of these sterotypes are true for me.
However it may not pertain to all the indians in India.
There are 2 types of Indians in my view.
- Indians from India
- Indian decent/ descendants from Indian people. (They live in other countries other than India)
I am of indian decent. My great great grandparents (or great grandparents some where along that line lol) came from india. They made made children etc…Then there is me. My parents are strict, yup they drilled me in my studies, no boyfriend until a certain age. Morals are values are expected. No I don’t speak Hindi. The language was lost along the lineage.
But I do know one or two words in Hindi lol.
It also depends on what country you live in as well that will determine how the Indians will act.
- What ever country the Indians grow up in that is the language they may speak.
Yes I am super religious. I am not a Hindu but I am a christian. My grandparents were Hindu but they converted to christian. - Yes I agree that not all Indians are dark.
My blood sisters are fair in complexion and I came out dark. I was dark when I was younger and I am now I am brown because I don’t really go in the sun anymore lol. This is due to the climatic conditions.
I know it’s confusing but yea…
I actually spoke to someone from India, her parents are strict too but then again it’s where you come from.
-When picking out colour for your character’s skin try to stay away from rose tones. Let that be a last resort. Pick more like yellow tones if that’s possible.
No sarees or Indian wear unless it’s Diwali, they’re going to the temple or just came back, or there is a wedding.
Again I am speaking from a descendant point of view.
Yes I have these so called stereotypes in my story. However it’s of my experience and do not represent all Indians.
You can maybe write a note in your story When representing them so no can get offended…
The language is HINDI NOT HINDU!!! It’s so fkn annoying when ppl say hindu…HINDU is a religion
…plus ppl also say that Indians are either dumb, ugly, criminals etc… or very nerdy have strict parents and all that crap!! Some even add that the dad doesn’t allow the girl to do anything…every culture has it…ppl judge Indians as very dark skinned…that’s not true…Indians have medium brown skin too and really fair skin too
We are conservative but not like…” you can’t wear a skirt above the knee “ type
Bruh…the deal with chai tea also…like (error 404) …it’s like saying tea tea…it’s literally the same thing
Yh I see this in YouTube comments sometimes
So true, my parents are so laid back and I have tons of freedom
Very true! My parents are from India but I don’t speak Hindi because they spoke to me in my mother tongue, Punjabi.
I’ve only seen people wear suits for special occasions like weddings otherwise it’s mostly just casual wear like jeans and a t-shirt.
You are quite right things have changed. But I am speaking about a descendant perspective though. In my country (not India) that is what some Indians do. The Indian wear is worn on occasions by not necessarily Hindus alone. I can’t believe things are not so in some parts of India since they are ones we got that tradition from.
I’m not from India either, but my parents are. However I live in an area where there’s a huge South Asian population so I see this a lot. From exposure to movies that come out of India, I notice that most of them wear jeans, shirt, etc. So, like causal clothing we wear in North America.
Sometimes traditions do tend to change. When you compare old and new movies you can see drastic changes in clothing attire.
Oh, yup quite true.
I wish that I lived where you live. It sounds so laid back and exciting lol
