ArtisticWaffle's Art Tips and Tricks

Hello! I’m back with another tutorial, as requested by @PokemonGo. This tutorial will focus on head shape. As I’ve said before, I’m not a professional and I just do this for fun, so this won’t be perfect. This is one way of doing this and if your way doesn’t match with mine, that’s okay. You can put your own spin on this. I’m just trying to get you started.

  1. Get a pretty large canvas ready on the app of your choice. (At least 1500x1500 pixels).

  2. Take a pencil brush or whatever you like to use to sketch. Personally, I like the texture of the pencil brush and it reminds me of drawing traditionally, which is where I started. I use a medium reddish brown to sketch because I like the warmth and it looks nice against skin. Draw a circle. This will be the starting point for the head. Erase extra lines and clean it up.

  1. Add two lines going almost straight down vertically, but at a slight angle inwards. You can do this on the same layer or a new one if you’d like.

  1. Finish of the head shape by drawing a sort of U shape connecting the lines from the last step. Make sure it’s pretty symmetrical.

  1. By know you should have the basic shape. If you simplify it, it’s really just a few basic shapes and lines. I outlined the basic shapes in different colors so you can see it better. It’s really only a circle, two straight lines, and a U shape. You don’t need to actually do this, it’s just a visual.

  1. Using the same brush, add a cross or plus to the face. This technically isn’t necessary, as we don’t want it if the final product, but it’s a good guide for where to place the eyes and facial features. Make sure the lines are centered in both ways. Eyes are halfway down the face, so the horizontal line should be too.

  1. Next I turned the opacity of all these layers down to 50 percent. You could merge them together, too, except the lines on the face, but I didn’t for tutorial purposes.

  1. I added a new layer to the very top and traced over what I had to clean it up and fix things without it becoming messy.

  1. Turn off the original sketch layers and add a neck and ears. Make sure to be flipping the canvas continuously to make sure you’re catching mistakes you wouldn’t usually see. Edit the shape and fix things to make it look how you’d like.

  1. Sketch in a face using the middle vertical line as a guide for the center of the face and the horizontal line as a guide for the eyes. Sorry about the slightly ugly face, as this is a face shape tutorial and not a facial feature tutorial.

  1. Turn off the face line guide layer. Fix anything you see needing fixing.

That’s it! I hope this tutorial helped you in some way! If you’d like to try it out, make sure to show me so I can see what you’ve done! Well, thanks for reading and good luck drawing!

Y’all probably don’t want to see this, BUT I attempted to merge all of the previous tutorials into one full blown human! (Expect the mouth, I’m still struggling with that XD)

I want to use it for one of my episodes, so it still needs a lot of work, but yea…
Here goes it!:

Can you do a full face like all together in one, you can be more brief with the details because it’s a lot but I would really appreciate it

hey I have a question, how do you get rid of your black outline?

Are you referring to lineart? I don’t use black lines because I find it a bit too harsh. I just use a sketch that’s brownish. You could turn the layer off though or color it with an alpha lock. Does this answer your question? sorry if I’m being stupid

What I want to work on is the body shape but I keep messing up with it all so if ain’t too much to ask…
Can you do a tutorial on a body shape?

Female, preferably. Actually, from the waist and onwards would be also fine
