I’m currently working on my story, and I’m drafting up my main character. I’m sure this seems like a dumb question, but what do people think about a heavily flawed main character?
I feel like people will hate my character I really want her to be relatable and realistic, but I’m wondering if people will dislike her. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’m wondering if people have anything they really dislike/like in a character.
Of course, my character will evolve and change through the storyline, but I don’t know if people still enjoy reading through the eyes of a flawed and misled character in the beginning and through the middle.
I feel like this is a really dumb question (like of course, why wouldn’t you want a realistic character), but let me know what your opinions are, I’d love to hear them!
It wud be totally grt!
I mean lets get realistic instead of going with the queen bee or nerd falling for the bad boy or mafia or rockstar!
Letting ppl see thru MCs change may get readers attracted…in my opinion…
Thank you so much for you opinion! I think I’ll go for what I had in mind for my character then… Hopefully people won’t hate her too much I promise I won’t make her horrible
As long as she is flawed and not straight up disrespectful like sl*t shames. I mean a lot of people will like reading a MC like that since people on here hate mary sue characters.
I love flawed characters because there is a lot of room for development. I think what’s important to show that the character is going to evolve is making sure that it’s made clear the behaviour they are portraying is meant to be taken as wrong, this way people would probably know that they are going to go through development unlike some MCs who are straight out rude/bad but it’s not viewed like that by any other character in the story. I hope that made sense lol.
I would read thee story! I like stories where the MC/LI is an as*hole and then mature through the story (I’m not insulting your character, it’s just an example).
That’s the point of a story, the character should develop with time and grow from their mistakes. <33
Haha , yeah I probably won’t make her a full on as*hole, but I definitely want her to not be flawless and just “perfect” and show her growth as you said!
But I will give you a tip. Make them suffer and pay for their mistakes, some stories have the “bad boy” who never suffer consequences for anything they do and it’s tiring
Sounds interesting! I hope to read about her one day, I don’t like mary sues that much
100% agree, I always thought those stories where the characters were guilty and payed for their mistakes were way more interesting than them just like saying sorry and then its over.
I get it that sometimes rich and powerful characters don’t suffer (they have the money to get away with many things), but it’s tiring to have the “invincible” character.
I would also recommend you have a disclaimer at the beginning of the story. Make the readers know that she will change with time and that they aren’t the MC, so she won’t act based on their morals and values.
Thanks for the suggestions! Yeah I think I got that suggestion about making sure it was clear the character was going to change, so I think I will definitely make a
disclaimer. For the story I’m writing right now, she isn’t just like an jerk to everyone, so it probably wouldn’t be super necessary, but I think I’ll do it just in case ! Thanks again!
