Cliche's you hate!

Okay so I decided to make a thread purely to post the cliche’s you hate or dislike or think have been wayyyyy overused in stories.
Just a few I dislike (but think can be done well if they’re carefully used)
-Badboys
-Goodboys
-Rich girl & poor boy that’s not approved of
-Pregnant with the _____ baby

^^ I’ve noticed a new trend where the MC doesn’t get pregnant until later on in the story, so you think it’s not a pregnancy story, you get really invested in the plot, but then… SURPRISE! … MC starts vomiting which is the universal epi code for: I’m pregnant

The GBF and the token POC (Both of these can be comedic if used in the right way, but they’re usually just thrown in because the writer wants to add ‘diversity’ to their story)

Oh man, I hate when they trick you like that
When that happens, tbh (and I mean no offense to anyone) I click out of the story and stop reading. I just can’t stand pregnancy stories, I just can’t :persevere:

Ughhhhh it’s such a stupid plot development! They’re just trying to add drama but there’s so many more options for plot development then that! If you want to hurry a story along I find either removing a character, adding a new character (with purpose and a story arc that will continue because of it) works far better than “I’m pregnant!”. No offence to anyone who has used it because OCCASIONALLY it can be used well but it’s kinda lazy tbh. If you really want to add a pregnancy arc make a different character pregnant not the MC.

Something that really annoys me too is unrealistic relationships. You can tell when a story’s been written by a really young person when things happen like two characters argue and that means they’ve ‘broken up’. Couples fight, everything’s not perfect and the characters should argue to show how strong their relationship really is.

That just proves Episode is doing the same sh*t over and over again. Even worse is that when the MC is clearly pregnant because she’s puking, she doesn’t feel good and she just had some (like come on), it’s always super obvious but that dumb girl is like “Oh I don’t know what’s wrong, it’s unusual” and then, there’s this friend who, 30 minutes later, I might add, goes like “But didn’t you have sex last weekend?” and goes like “BISH YOU PREGNANT” but the MC doesn’t believe it until she does a pregnancy test.

I think even worse is that those girls are always like “OMG I’m finished, it’s the end of my life” when they could just stop being dramatic and get an abortion??

Ugh, where to start…

In advance, sorry if my opinions don’t match yours. It’s just how I feel about them.

  1. Mafia stories - gangsters, mafia bosses, etc.
As I was trying to find some good story to read today, I noticed that almost entire Action is about mafia bosses or in general, about mafias/gangs. Naturally, the main character is either a victim or another person involved in this gang stuff.
    Man, that’s so original…
  2. Pregnancy stories. I think that pregnancy shouldn’t be used as a ‘tool’ to add drama to the stories (and lets be honest, many authors think otherwise). Doesn’t matter if the main character’s pregnant by her boyfriend, teacher, sexy stranger, gang leader or Santa Claus, it’s still a cliché.
  3. Vampire & Werewolf stories.
These stories make up approx 70% of the whole Fantasy shelf. Some of them are well-written and with unique plot. However, most of them are (unfortunately) similar. A tough alpha meeting a lost/hunted werewolf girl, or a human getting involved with a vampire.
How I wish more people would come up with some new fantasy-story ideas.
  4. Holy Trinity of episode stories - a bad boy, a good guy and the third option (a nerd, a joker, mysterious guy,… your choice).
  5. Celebrities, millionaires, billionaires and elite.
I know these stories are fiction but what are the chances that a girl with no connections to the ‘elite’ meets a celebrity or a millionaire? Despite this fact, many stories I found on the Romance shelf were based on this.

Of course, there are many more but I don’t want to sound like some hater who crawled from the deepest part of hell lol.
Every author deserves a big respect, doesn’t matter if the story contains cliché or not (frankly, nowadays it’s hard to avoid cliché in your stories because their amount increases day by day )

Moved to Episode Fan Community since this is about Episode cliches. Make sure to check out our Forum Tutorial for more info about where to correctly create topics, and feel to PM me if there are any questions.

Amen! Seriously these stories are getting repetitive and frankly need some fresh ideas stat! Using cliche’s like the 5 you listed are painful to read and deliver overused uninteresting plots with no juicy passionate writing. It’s these stories are being written for the sake of being written and not for the sake of writing something their proud of. The turn of phrase I would use is a bone with no meat on it. At this point a lot of stories are practically plagiarism of the same old stories. I’d love to read some exciting and entertaining Fantasy stories with real ideas that are unique and carefully written. Don’t worry about voicing your opinion! Considering this is a thread for cliches most people reading will probably understand what you mean lmao.
I agree though, writing a story is really hard and I’m in no way saying it’s not. Every author does deserve the highest level of respect cliche or not however I also think a lot of authors aren’t proud of what they write… I just hope this thread will bring light to the cliche’s that are overused challenging the brilliant wonderful episode writers in our community to write something truly them and different. I have absolute faith in them to write something inventive and unique and that’s all I hope this thread will deliver.

I think a lot of writers are younger than we think and don’t understand enough about abortions to convey it. I agree though it’s definitely overused and some new reactions to pregnancy would be nice at least! Also I think a lot of writers are scared to mention abortions because they’re a bit of a touchey subject for some people and they may be worried about backlash they might receive for it… Which I think is ridiculous. Isn’t it episode that is always saying to add diverse views into stories? Whatever view anyone has it’s always more interesting to see a new response to these cliche story twists! Totally agree.

Thanks aha I wasn’t sure if the thread would have any non episode cliches as well so I put it in chat just in case. Thankyou for moving it  Have a nice day x

Yes! That’s right! I once read a guide Episode made to help beginners write, and they specifically said something along the lines of: “If you want to write a story, surprise us! Make it original! Don’t just write about a girl going to high school with friends.” They said pretty much that BUT they’re the ones always copy-pasting that plot…

Yes unfortunately episode originals are guilty of cliche’s. Mainly because their job is to write popular stories and because of how saturated the app is with cliche storylines the most popular ones are cliches. So episode writes those storylines… Don’t get me wrong episode originals can be fantastic! Many a night I have spent binge reading the featured shelf but… I have to agree with you and say even featured episode writers need a fresh flush of ideas.

I think this might be it too. I was reading a story were MC got pregnant got pregnant by her teacher…as one does…and when the topic of abortion came up, she was like “but I don’t want to kill my baby.” Abortion is a very political topic, and I feel like that line alone kinda comes dangerously close to agreeing a completely different audience, regardless of whether they’re young or actually feel this way.

I have to admit I never thought of it that way… I was born and raised to think that abortion was always an option and that it’s acceptable and not controversial. Where I live, it’s not really a taboo subjects so I always thought of abortion as not necessarily a bad thing, but I see how some people may have different opinions now.
