Cliche's you hate!

Yeah, I’ve seen it. It was actually one of my favorite movies for a while.

I actually mean an episode story, haha.

It wouldn’t be an original idea, but definitely a departure from most of the stuff I see on the app.

-Romances between teachers and students
-Pregnant by the <insert ridiculous male like ‘bad boy’, ‘mafia guy’, ‘tutor’>.
-Bad boys who somehow end up falling in love with a good girl and the girl getting pregnant
-When the MC is really stupid and doesn’t think she’s pregnant until she’s given birth
-The childhood bestie who comes back and falls in love with the MC
-Arguing over a tiny thing and breaking up for the sake of drama

But I’m not hating. These could be executed well, if combined with good directing and a plot.

Haha! So true. And absolutely. I think the main thing to convey to all writers with cliche plot ideas is that the community does notice these trends and show how originality is valued. Executing a story well or adding your own personality to it with no shame and utterly owning your storyline will result in a far better story than ‘writing for the sake of it’ ever will.

I agree with you! I loathe romances between teacher and students! I mean, what’s so alluring in this shit?
I, for example, become a teacher in a few years and when I see stories which a teacher can’t be professional… This is just disgusting.:nauseated_face:
I don’t understand how Episode can tolerate and promote such stories. This is a criminal offence! (No matter, in which country you live; it’s illegal everywhere.)

I see so many stories where the MC gets bad grades, and so to make up for it, they hook up with their teacher. They don’t ask for tutoring, they don’t make the effort to work harder. Even if they do ask for tutoring, the tutoring session always ends up with them hooking up. Though it sometimes happens in real life, it’s unrealistic.

I guess the authors really liked the show I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant and ran with it. :woman_shrugging:

Oh and I think someone might have mentioned this but I usually don’t like stories fetishising muderers or gang leaders, or bad boys who smoke and do bad things like that and are also physically/emotionally abusive. I don’t know about y’all but I want a nice guy that treats me right instead of a guy in a gang and smokes and doesn’t want anything to do with me. Pretty much the entire action/drama section is filled with these stories.

I also hate how all of a sudden the “bad boy” suddenly likes the new girl after hating everyone for years and not dating/only doing one night stands. Of course this can happen in real life but it’s really unlikely and unrealistic and I’ve seen it so many times in stories. (Secret Of Rain actually did that pretty well though)

I’ve seen plenty of stories where the MC gets kidnapped or brutally abused or something then falls in love with the abuser. There’s a real thing such as this (Stockholm’s Syndrome I think it’s called when the victim starts to believe that the abuser loves them, it’s a mental condition brought upon by abuse) but I feel like it’s glorifying abusers to young children, and since they’re the ones primarily reading these bad boy/pregnancy/gang stories, it’s exposing kids to the wrong things.

OH AND I ALSO REALLY HATE teacher/student relationships. (Some stories did this really good though but I’m talking about the majority) First off, it’s really wrong and ILLEGAL. The teacher could lose his/her job. Do you think that he’d/she’d risk losing his job that he/she went to university for, for a girl/boy in high school/college? I really doubt it. And if that is the case, then maybe he/she not a good teacher.

Sorry for my rant, just had to get that off my chest :joy::sweat_smile:

I agree. I know it was rhetorical but to answer your question as to why people read and write that and what’s so alluring it’s all based around one much larger cliche. The teacher romance isn’t a cliche it’s part of a much much bigger cliche, the forbidden love trope. I’ve always hated this trope because it’s so twisted and fetishist nowadays with “In love with the teacher” “In love with my step-brother” “In love with my best friends dad” “In love with my step-dad” “In love with my boss” “In love with my abuser” It’s disgusting and illegal and overall just mank ngl.
It used to be an amazing trope with a lot to it, for instance “The princess falling in love with a servant” was very topical in the 16th century and that cliche made for some great books. However the entire point of the old-forbidden love trope was showing love without touching. The princess would be in love with the servant but NEVER do anything with him, like an eternal drum roll, but by the end of the story you’re desperately wishing society would change and she could be with someone below her station because the man she will be married off to is dull and boring and you have such love for the main character that you don’t want that for her.
THAT is what forbidden love is meant to be. Not this disgusting illegal immature and unprofessional take on it. Forbidden love is called Forbidden for a reason, you can’t DO anything with the characters.

not gonna lie, i’m a sucker for a lot of cliches (enemies to lovers, mushy romantic tropes, bad boys) but one thing that i can’t stand is:

"i’m not like other girls"

obviously she’s so much better and smarter than other girls because she wears jeans instead of short skirts, reads books instead of partying all the time (can other girls even read??? don’t think so, sweaty) and she doesn’t wear make-up because eww that’s just so fake!! every boy that meets her thinks she’s greek goddess level gorgeous, but of course she doesn’t see it. the most popular boy in school usually wants to leave his girly diva curls gf to date her because she’s so drama-free and cool, even though she shames other girls because of their interests. she can often be seen with fawn beach waves and playing video games (bc other girls don’t like video games, duh!!!) with her male childhood best friend who is actually in love with her but doesn’t say anything until she starts to date the popular boy!!

True, but also remember a large portion of people really are like that. They didn’t wear makeup, they didn’t follow fashion or party but they wished they would be liked for who they are. The thing about those stories is that the writer is usually one of those girls (not always but usually) or at least in highschool/secondary school they were kinda unpopular and didn’t understand the girly stuff like that. So really these stories are a projection of the attention they wish they had in the real life and thinking about it like that, it’s not so much a bad cliche as a sad truth. The people you ignore or judge by the cover may have very different fantasies then what you’d expect irl especially as teens

Yeah I think most girls who write about this are writing about themselves through some kind of wish fulfillment.

There is a difference between not being feminine, and seeing yourself as better because of it.

I imagine these authors are making the characters an extension of themselves. They believe deserve to have people fawning over them because they perceive themselves as unique. Sometimes I forget that these authors are younger than me and have a narrow perception of things.

When they get older I guess, they’ll realize there is nothing special or unique about not dressing up or wearing makeup.

It’s still an annoying trope though, and an unhealthy message to send to girls. Just because you’re not wearing skirts or wearing makeup, doesn’t mean you’re not vying for a guy’s attention lol. By bragging about how different you are, you’re still competing.

I feel like the story Troublemaker got all this Bad Boy nonsense started.
Interestingly enough, I learned from my mom that the Bad Boys that Epsiode are constantly using are based off of a 50’s stereotype of the greaser clique.

Ex:
The movie Grease
The book/movie The Outsiders (rich and popular: socs, leather and poor: greasers)

Hence, the origin of leather jackets, eyebrows with slits, and black hair.
Do watch/read The Outsiders, though. It’s amazing.

Bad boys used to be guys that were against rules, they disliked favorism. Teachers didn’t like them because they weren’t submissive and they called them “bad.” Now you look at bad boys… they are just assholes.

With that being said, if any of you create the original bad boy, PM me the link :flushed:

Yes that’s fair.
The way I see it, as I’ve only recently left highschool so I’m quite young myself, I do understand them. There were many girls in my highschool who didn’t wear makeup or dress up and acted like they were better because of it and mostly, I hate to say it, it was because of bullying. Many of the other students did harass them because of their self absorbed attitudes and anti-conformity attitudes. Which led to them being very isolated. So the need for a wish to be fulfilled I understand, I sympathize with them.
It is the wrong attitude to send though, I’d love to read a story where all women and all types are embraced and show all sides of the story with some serious girl power and enticing storytelling. But I suppose my own wish won’t get fulfilled lol.
It’s very true as well whether you wear makeup, skirts, jeans, natural looks or glam looks, whether you’re rocking an afro or straightened bangs you can be an amazing talented and beautiful person.
These stories always claim to not ‘judge a book by its cover’ by saying nerdy girls can be beautiful. So can girls wearing makeup and so can girls who go to the gym and so can girls who wear skirts. Also I can’t stress this enough GIRLS WHO WEAR MAKEUP CAN BE NERDS. GIRLS WHO WEAR SKIRTS CAN STAY UP FOR 9 HOURS TO WATCH A LORD OF THE RINGS MARATHON. so seriously don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Write a story about that.

Seriously if anyone does send me the link

Very true! I’d love to see some bad boys based on other origins as well. For instance the 70s-90s anti-conformity boys. The anti-society and ‘I don’t conform to socialism’ boys. I think that could be incredibly entertaining to see lol.
Also the original bad boys in history were the king’s. William the conqueror king of England in 1066 destroyed an entire earldom because he was mad about a rebellion. Before that the bad boys were the villains in myths and legends or the dark heroes like in Greek myth. I think if people investigate this more they could get a much larger range of personality types for ‘the bad boy’
