They’re the only ones I like, in fact.
And in fact, nobody in thread was saying you can’t use those features ever. Nobody said that. Why do you still pretend that we’re here to tell you “DON’T EVER USE THOSE FEATURES OR ELSE, THAT’S APPROPRIATION”.
It’s being said over and over in different ways, but it all comes down to how realistically you portray it. And when the majority of casts have one or more features that belong to minorities within the character’s race, that’s simply not realistic anymore.
Edit
Sorry, the wording in the paragraph above is horrible.
I meant, most casts where the majority of characters, of whatever race, show features widely recognized to only appear in a minority of the character’s race (ex. blue eyes among POC or plump lips among white people).
But clearly since you like them so much, go on and keep ‘liking’ them. Just know that it won’t stop people from speaking up.
I will confess that I didn’t finish reading the whole thread, but hey! I’m not wearing my glasses and got tired of squinting.
So firstly, I feel that I can’t speak on the way other people feel about the representation of their races as I’m caucasian. With that said, I would like to speak to the argument regarding frequency. Though I agree that these specific features may be overplayed on the app, I think these things need to be looked at on a story-to-story basis. If there are twenty stories and of those stories all the white female MCs have full lips but no other characters in the story have full lips, then technically speaking, in the individual reality that is each individual story in question, the percentage of people with full lips is actually very small. Though I understand the argument regarding frequency on the app as a whole, I think it’s unfair to expect some authors to change the use of these features, but not others, as that is what would be necessary to depict “reality” across all stories on the app.
Perhaps I’m just unlucky lol but if you actually picked 20 random stories (as in, very well from the New User Stories section) among both LL and INK you’ll see that this
is a rarity ![]()
My point was that we should judge them based on the proportions within the story rather than in regards to the entire app, as from what I gathered from the argument, it applied cultural appropriation to the app in its entirety rather than judging individuals for their actions.
Ah I see now. Though I disagree to some extent on this point
I feel like, as you said, it’s much more important to look at what individual stories have to offer. The app as a whole then comes as a consequence.
Welp… All I can say is ignorance is bliss, especially in your case 🤷🏾 I’m done talking.
Oh I absolutely agree that individual authors need to be held accountable for cultural appropriation. I just misunderstood your argument.
You are correct and somebody said having big lips is a trend. No baby, just no… having big lips is not a trend and honestly I don’t like when people think having our features is a trend, when a long time ago Black Americans features were deemed ugly apparently on Black Americans… but not on others???
I seen white people with curly hair (Irish, Scottish or biracial) and big lips not that big.
No, knowing me I was probably unclear with the wording
Clearly you and almost everyone here have reading comprehension problems, that’s not at all what I’m saying. Or you’re simply trying to make me look bad to silence me. Whatever, do you, clearly having a different opinion than yours is forbidden here. I will still defend authors’ rights to write what they want, especially if the ‘issue’ in question is as small and ridiculous as that. You clearly want to give a bad meaning to something that was completely innocent, your prerogative. I hope authors will continue to ignore you and write their stories based on their preferences and without being influenced by others who have no right whatsoever to tell them how their stories should and should not be written.
I deleted my previous comment because it was just poking the bear, but my point still stands. If people, especially BIPOC, tell you that what you’re doing IS an issue, you do not get to ridiucle them and say that it’s “small and ridiculous”. You don’t get to ask for people’s feedback and opinions, and when they put the time into educating you, insult them and say they can’t read. You don’t get to tell people that you hope people will continue to ignore them and their issues because you don’t think what they’re saying is valid. You don’t get to play the victim, this isn’t about you. Nobody is trying to silence you, you are actively silencing people.
Don’t worry I can read fine. I can see clearly what you are trying to say. I ask respectively that you don’t push your opinions onto others and say that other opinions are invalid as it really doesn’t make yourself look good. If you took time out of your day to actually care about people’s criticism as you do keeping up this argument then we wouldn’t be having an issue. Also if almost everyone has a problem with what you are saying then that is on you and not reflecting their education. For the last time people were agreeing with you and then when people brought up their opinions and you shut them down that is when the problem emerged. People’s culture being taken away from them by the hands of mainly white people/authors is not a “small and ridiculous” issue as you put it. We realise their is some exceptions but not enough that everyone is doing it.
I think the lesson here is don’t play devil’s advocate if you are not open to ideas and other people’s concerns on a sensitive topic.
A more effective approach shouldn’t be dismissive and you determining who shouldn’t be offended because you want to be creative. I don’t have the right to tell someone to stop being sensitive on something. I don’t know that person’s experience and how that topic maybe triggering.
You may have the privilege of not knowing what it is like to be discriminated on your features or culture from a dominated group. You may want to express that in your writing because you feel entitled to do so… Just know context matter and others may vocalize their concerns on your creative freedom that may be offensive.
Honey, nobody is not trying to pick on you. All we are trying to do is to get YOU a person of no color to understand why people give their feedback about these features THATS ALL. Instead of being UNDERSTANDING of people’s opinions, especially about features of POC!! You question, ignore and act like what we are saying to you DOES NOT EXIST. This is why there are so many people who are ignorant or choose to be ignorant when it comes to POC!!! All it takes is to be understanding towards someone else’s opinion thats it.
Sweetie you have a long way to go to understand that this generation in age does not take that ignorant crap.
Thank you!!
And thank you @Hellchaser @bakedpotato and @maree_s
I am going to leave it after this but I think you are the only one saying this not anyone else. Also about us making you look bad, you are making yourself look bad.
See yeah no some white people have curly hair but some of the hairstyles you shown are NATURAL hairstyles. Yes white people can have curly hair but most white people do not grow natural curly hair .
A lot of white people have natural curly hair like that, clearly you’ve never been to Spain or in south Italy. I’m so tired of the ignorance of this fandom when it comes to the difference in white people. Just because in America you don’t have white people like that, doesn’t mean the rest of the world doesn’t. White american people are not the examples of all white people.
