Sadly people with DID suffer from some sought of horrific trauma and the personalities help them cope with the situation. Depending how on depth you want and what you want from the story obviously you don’t want too dark.
I have studied DID in depth and quite remarkable how the mind works all personalities are all different people with their own personalities in one person.

I agree. While the circumstances of which DID occurs is really terrible, the way the mind forms these personalities is really interesting.
