Discussion: African American Stories

Hmm… I’m Catholic and I’m going to have my Muslim character talking about her beliefs soon! I think religious toleration is super important

I’m honored, truly.

Most of the main characters in my story are POC, with the main female character a dark skinned person. One of her friends who is also black does have some stereotypical idiosyncrasies, but I made her that way for a specific reason, and she does get character development. I understand everyone’s sentiments, which is one of the reasons I made my story. To give people a more well rounded view of African-Americans, and other POC.

And there’s also no cc in my story, everyone is the way I want them to be.

Ahhhhhh I would love more stories like this. As a young black girl myself. I don’t see many of those stories which is just really sad.

Why would people get offended if your character talks about their beliefs? I’m Christian, and I don’t get annoyed when other people talk about their religion or beliefs, unless they offend or hate on other people who believe differently. I understand not wanting to go into detail about it, but maybe you could have a character mention that on Sunday, they can’t go to the movies with their friends because they’re going to church/mass/their place of worship.

I completely agree. We need more stories with black MC. Not just African-Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, and other black cultures. I mostly see stories with white MCs, and I’m not trying to discredit those authors at all. There’s so many cultures/ethnicites involving Afrocentric peoples. But, the main thing is that people need to do their research when writing about any race, ethncity, etc. that they’re not a part of.

There are, however, more stories about black people than, say Indians or native Americans or Brazilians or Japanese people. It would be interesting to see diversity that isn’t so black and white. No pun intended.

Of course! Everybody of all races and nationalities should be appealed to. This is a writing platform that is open to all races of people. I feel like people that are of a particular nationality should write stories to appeal to other people who are they same nationality as they are.

I agree with you. Honestly, there are a lot of stories that consists of white MCs (not trying to be racist), and that’s okay. At the same times, there should be room for more diversity. There’s nothing wrong with appealing to people of all races and nationalities. An author has the power to write about anything they like. You’re free to write about anything that interests you. If it means that you have to do research in order to write the story, by all means do it.

I can’t call it “sad” because a lot of authors within the Episode community aren’t African American so they can’t really write stories about them. However, I’ve read some stories where they incorporate black characters or POC into their stories. An author should appeal to everyone that reads their story.

True you do have a point there, and yeah I’m loving these stories I see.

Yeah. Actually, I’m releasing a story towards the end of this year that is geared towards African Americans, and their ways of thinking. If you’re interested in it, you can PM me so I can tell you more about it. It’s basically a story about how the real world functions. The Episode app is already full of cliche stories, so why not make a story that relates to the real world.

Personally, I try my best to write about characters who both look like me and don’t. My first priority will always be brown girls, but my next story is going to be about a Japanese girl called Naomi who falls in love with death… who also happens to be a woman.
