Typical American viewpoint. It’s the exact same idea as the ‘war on terror’ nonsense. You can’t fight an ideological battle with guns, and you cant fight a frame of mind with police.
Criminal justice system? Needs work. But rapists are put away. Abusers are put away. When reported. This is where the problem crops up. How the hell is a better criminal justice system going to help when people don’t come forward? And dont say they should just come forward. It’s not that simple and you bloody well know it.
The answer is actually quite simple, it’s just difficult to put into practice. You need a theoretical framework that gains reaction and deals with problems facing people in specific environments, in specific ways. Sex, sexuality, sexual assault and the like are issues to do with Sex and SEXISM
Again, I hate to get into hypothetical theoretical socio-economics here but what society needs isnt more guns. It isn’t more police. It’s education. Young boys and girls need to be taught explicitly what is acceptable and what isn’t, and they need to feel safe and comfortable coming out about these things because this society we have isn’t conducive to this mindset. This is why feminism is uniquely qualified. Someone with a feminist mindset knows their damn shit with regards to this, and with a platform, could make more of a difference than more goddamn police
But instead people blame the victims, pretend the problem isn’t there, and shove their heads in the sand screaming about the stupid Tumblr feminists who whine about ‘man-spreading’ instead of listening to the ones who literally created this field of thought which has already changed the world in huge ways. Saying feminism isn’t needed in America is dumbfounding to me. Pretending that the genders are on equal terms because the law says they are is the most ignorant, blindly patriotic way to approach this field of thought
Feminism isn’t about equality anymore in general, in America. It’s about women being better than men.
My mentioning the criminal justice system was a broader example of what needs work in America. I wasn’t talking about this specific problem of sexual assault. I mean in general. It needs reform, not because of how people feel about coming forward.
I agree with you that people need more education, we don’t need more feminists or police, though. Police need reform, and feminism needs to dissolve. We also need more education for people who when they become victims, they should be able to come forward. That’s what needs work. We need to help people understand that when you’re a victim it’s okay to come forward and you should.
That’s like trying to argue that Christianity is about having multiple wives, or saying that Islam is about oppressing women. Don’t take a vocal minority and claim it to be the majority. That’s ludicrous.
But the majority of women aren’t feminists. They believe in equality for the sexes, but the people that identify as feminist are so most often like that that this is what the movement has become.
And the framework you’d use for That? Feminism. I hate to tell you, but feminism hasn’t changed. Just like a Christian not believing in God osnt Christian, a feminist who wants superiority instead of equality isn’t a feminist. They’re an asshole.
And dont pretend like its a big movement. I think you’ll find it was a member of the alt right who killed someone at their stupid rally, not the feminists who showed up in peaceful protest. It’s getting bigger, and good. It means ThT smarter more educated opinions.
I am done. You are a despicable person in a lot of ways, I’m not gonna lie. Enough with the 2-bit victim blaming
That’s my point somewhat. I don’t think feminism means that anymore and a lot of people don’t think that’s what feminism means anymore.
If you ask someone if they’re a feminist, and they say no, they don’t mean they don’t believe in equality, they mean they aren’t a feminist as they are now known.
I get what you’re saying, but it is only a small portion of feminists who want to be better than men. Wanting to be better than men isn’t feminism, it’s about equality. If someone wants to be superior, then you’re correct and that’s a different problem, it has nothing to do with feminism. <3
Then why are we letting a group of feminazis try to steal the word from us? What will that achieve other than allowing misogynistic men to slowly close in on women’s rights activists?
Who do you think came up with branding feminists as evil?! Scared men back in the 1800s who didn’t want women to have the vote. Why are we letting them win now just because they can manipulate the media to make it seem like feminists are like that?
This right here is it chief. In relation to this, Some, not all, people who aren’t heterosexual have said to me they became gay because people associated their actions and desires as gay. They started to think, hey maybe I am because I like this or that. Again, NOT ALL, just SOME of the people I’ve talked to who aren’t heterosexuals.
I believe girls should be allowed to do what’s considered “boyish” and vice versa. I hate when people tell little boys not to cry, it’s a set up for mental illness and the inability to express oneself and emotions truthfully and the ability to always feel like you have to be strong and put on an act of happiness even when you’re not. OR when people tell little girls not to climb trees or wrestle or play with toy cars. If they want to let them. Children don’t see sex and gender like we do. It’s all neutral until someone points out that it’s not. We come into the world without any idea what gender or gender roles are and only learn about it when someone points it out or curiosity leads us to ask questions. From experience, I’ve noticed that children, in the earliest part of their lives, play and like what they like simply cause they want to and have no basis or agenda for it.
P.S. I love talking to people and gaining their perspective. It helps me understand why people are the way they are and why they do the things they do and act the way they act. I challenge everyone to honestly, without bias, spend each day engaging in a conversation/moment (mainly listening) with someone who doesn’t think or live like you. Not only is it refreshing, but it’s also eye-opening to the point of making you a better and more compassionate human and a more well-rounded attritubtion to society as well.
It’s like what’s happening to certain races and religions in the media at the moment. The bigots use newspapers and TV to hone us into the people who are acting badly so the sheep out there blindly think that all of the group are like that.
What do you think happened after 9/11? All “Muslim-looking” people (whatever the hell that means. I didn’t know you could look like a religion) were targetted as evil for the actions of less than 1% of the Muslim population.
It’s so easy to believe “well black people commit more crime” or “well feminists want to be better than men” or “well Muslims think women are less than men” if you don’t open your eyes. If you let the straight, white, Christian, cisgender, male heads of these companies string you along.
Well, I know you know that some men were part of the feminist movement back then, too. Just as some women didn’t want the right to vote, either. It isn’t men vs women.
Every time I see a feminist in the media, she’s seen as a kind of paragon, and then I’m drawing my own conclusions as well as researching other feminists and also anti-feminists.
In America, I don’t know about where you guys are, but where I am, feminism is just tired now. Women have equal rights. We don’t need anymore equal rights activists. This is mainstream feminism, that’s why no one wants anything to do with them.
I’ve met someone who says she is a feminist, but she literally told me like, “I don’t want to tell people I’m a feminist” because even she knew what the movement has become.
I don’t think anyone truly believes that all individuals in a group are “like that”. #notall or whatever? Most people know that people are individuals, not a group or representation of an idea.
