DISCUSSION: Favorites in anime :))

I can’t really answer all the questions, so instead I’ll just pick my top 5 and add some notes after…

  1. Bubblegum Crisis / Crash

  2. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (aka “Battle of the Planets”)

  3. Space Battleship Yamato (aka “Star Blazers”)

  4. Super Dimension Fortress Macross (aka “Robotech: The Macross Saga”)

  5. Space Pirate Captain Harlock

(* yes, I know I’m that old.)

I don’t really have ships in these, except definitely Rick and Lisa in Macross.
Minmay just was too much of a diva and too flighty. Lisa was my favourite character.

As for the Knight Sabers in BGC, I only ship them with each other. Something about being in a secret mecha power suit cyberpunk superhero group in a dark future Tokyo leaves little time for outside relationships, IMO. Nene was my favourite.

Another footnote on BubbleGum Crisis. It had the best subtitles of any foreign language property I’ve ever seen. The subs would be in different colours for each character, another font for radio dialogue, a different colour for song lyrics and another for background signage and graffiti. When two characters have a scene, the dialogue for each character is right above or below that character only, and vise versa, so it’s super clear who’s saying what. And it was all very visually easy to follow and didn’t interfere with the visuals. I’ve never seen its equal.

Note: Oddly, I only ever saw Harlock dubbed in French on the CBLT French language channel in our area. I often wondered if certain languages suited translation from Japanese better than others. I’ve never seen it in English or Japanese with subtitles. Harlock has always been a French space pirate to me.
