Discussion: How Sexual Assault is Portrayed in Stories

This story I’m currently (hate-)reading has such a weird relationship with SA.

One of the main characters is a gay man who constantly flirts, gropes and flashes the other two (straight) male characters in the story (as well as some other lady characters doing the latter), even though he is fully aware about them both being in loving monogamous relationships, one which he even actively tried to matchmake. Hell, a line suggest that he even perhaps groped one of the guys in his sleep while he was staying at his apartment. And all of this is downplayed as ‘oh well, that’s annoying. Get used to it.’ Accompanied with an eye roll and a metaphorical slap to the wrist even when many scenes have them not consenting and being uncomfortable.

Then there are two times girls had forced themselves onto guys. Admittedly one of them is understandably demonised for being a crazy ex and is never seen in the story again (as far as I’m aware of), but the other woman blatantly said that she groped a friend’s brother‘s crotch while she is extremely intoxicated. In a way, both of them are just swept under the rug as soon as their scenes are over.

And then it is the men-on-women stuff. Sure both times this happens, they are not jokes and put both women victims in danger (until the heroic men of the story rescue them) but both scenes are gratuitous. Both women were not consenting at all, and both perpetrators both went to jail. This is technically fine - maybe relieving - but then you remember other dynamics aren’t treated the same way.

All of these with no content warnings and full of shock value despite the story saying that it is a ‘rom-com’.

Oh, and the said gay man usually slut-shames one of the women (who also happened to be the drunk groper and was nearly SA’d herself one the middle of the story), and it is supposed to be mostly humourous.
