I love that you brought this up because I have seen this happen a few times on Episode and in other media.
Race bending not only to diversify but also to lessen the appearance of racially-motivated bullying does have a…weird vibe to it. Like, there is an awareness that having all the non-POC characters gang up on the POC characters “looks bad”, but instead of addressing it, they just race bend everyone so the gang up looks “more fair.”
It gives me a similar vibe as race bending a black “bad boy” gang member to a white “bad boy” gang member to avoid racial stereotyping backlash as opposed to having an open discussion about racial stereotypes.
