honestly, if you’re gonna write another story where the only realistic thing is the use of the word mafia (and yet 99% of times it’s misused) please don’t
I’m sorry if I sound harsh, but the app has too many problematic stories like this, it doesn’t need new ones

well ty for saying this but i still will!

Are you sure it needs to be a mafia story? Have you even read something about mafia that wasn’t on Episode? I’m talking about real facts. Because if you’re gonna write a stereotyped story I’m sorry but there’s already so many stories like that. But if you intend to write a story that actually represents what it is, then go ahead, I have nothing to say.

you gotta understand the difference between real life and fiction . all the authors make stories in their own way it could be their own world.

the problem is that the word “mafia” has an history. it’s not fiction. and nonetheless it’s a “heavy” history that unfortunately is part of the story of my culture. if it was really your own world, you’d use other words, your words, not one that has such implications

i understand that.

i think what @EtherealWitch is trying to say is you shouldn’t romanticize being in the mafia. Being in the mafia isn’t something that’s “fun” or “cool” , it’s in fact very dangerous and Episode is a 12+ app. So when you’re writing a story about the mafia and not portraying it realistically, that’s where things get difficult. Young readers will get the wrong impression and that’s what we don’t want.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m not blaming you or trying to discourage you from writing a story about that but i really think you should think about portraying it realistically. There are tons of stories on the app that romanticize being in the mafia already and they’re using “fiction” instead of real life like you said, which isn’t a good thing. So I think you should do some research and if you’re going to write a story like that, don’t romanticize it.

I recommend you also read this thread to get others’ opinions on this topic as well
many people don’t agree with the idea of mafia stories because readers have a bad history with them. Let's discuss Mafia stories

I’ll tell you the truth, I’m not a fan of mafia stories and I have a feeling that I’m becoming this anti-mafia flag bearer here on the forums. However, I don’t despise mafia per se as a topic, nor can I forbid you to write about it if that’s what you wish.

So to answer your questions,

  1. Do your research. If you’re gonna write about a topic that you know little about (and no, Episode is not a valid source of information), do your research before you plan the story. It works for mafia topics as it works for gardening, bungee jumping, or playing an instrument.

  2. No. 1 also helps you to be original and think outside the box. Frankly, there’s way too many mafia stories that come from the same cookie cutter. The mere word ‘mafia’ is enough to get you reads, but it doesn’t guarantee that your story will be remembered nor praised. If all you want is reads, go ahead and make the usual white innocent or bada$$ MC with her usual tan possessive and mysterious Italian, Mexican or Spanish LI. If you care about quality, try to think of way that your story can become unique, because it has the power to be different and to stand out positively. Different roles, different plot, different archetypes.

  3. For the love of whoever you want, keep the cultural and racial stereotypes out the door. There’s plenty of threads out there that are dedicated to educating people and authors about different cultures, ethnicities, religions, etc. You find them here. See what’s right and what’s offensive and avoid the latter.

  4. As for personal likes and dislikes, I don’t think I’ll ever read a mafia story that’s all based around the romantic relationship between MC darling and Mr hot LI. I find it dull and extremely boring. I also don’t particularly like it when the story is unrealistic when it’s trying to be realistic. One thing is if it’s meant to be absurd but otherwise it just looks cringy. I do like thriller and mystery elements though. So maybe
 add some riddles, ambiguity, idk?

just wanted to say that i appreciate it that you gave me some tips and im def gonna change my plan , but i just wanted to say that it was already very different but i just wanted to know what to do and what to not do

Honestly if you want to right it you should one don’t is to not if there are relationships between characters make them healthy relationships not abusive. And a do is make the story line different then the other mafia stories make yourself stand out. I hope you enjoy writing the story.

Personally, I don’t think you should add the whole male dominance or misogynic viewpoints. I’ve also seen many stories with literal borderline sexual harassment because the “badda$$ mob boss” is controlling and apparently people find it “hot”. I find it incredibly disturbing because Episode is an app where young people are present and stories like these could influence their minds and make them think that it is okay to do that to other humans. It’s not only ignorant but extremely dangerous. In no way do I find it hot to traumatize a human being. It isn’t acceptable and shouldn’t be a thing, and it’s horrifying that people are fond of stories like those. It could make people who have actually been through traumas with sexual harassment think that it is okay if people treat them like that when in reality it is not.
Also, I highly dislike the stories where the women are shown as helpless damsels in distress who need to be saved by someone else.
Stories like those are repeated continuously and it’s quite annoying actually. I’d read stories that are a bit different where the women are powerful themselves.
People would disagree with me because feminism is looked down upon and I can understand why. Women themselves have made the term feminism look toxic but you gotta understand the difference between a feminist and a misandrist. I am not against men and I never will be, but I just dislike the way females are viewed.
I don’t know if this was helpful but lmk!

  • this topic for sure has many different opinions (which is normal), but feel free to write whatever you want. You are the author. If it will get some hate (which is immature) after the story is released, at least be prepared for it, because of everyone’s different point of view.
  • I have written this in another topic, but some people have to realize this is fiction, like
are werevolves and vampires real (they also harm people)? the answer is no lol. And also, every story includes a trigger warning and if you are not a fan of this genre, simply don’t click on it.
  • I feel like you shouldn’t add a huge amount of toxicity. And I get that some people have their own issues, which are taken care of later on in life, but still. And including racial/cultural statements would be wrong too :((
  • make this person (who’s in the mafia) a person with feelings, not some cold-hearted, ruthless monster. Let him at least have personality.

that’s all I have to say :))

I wish you a successful writing journey!

yes ! everything you just said i was planning to do. thankss
