Do most writers abandon contest entries if they don't win?

I’m kind of thinking of entering the r&r contest but I’m not sure yet. I don’t want to publish a story unless I’m committed to updating it…
But I heard that a lot of people enter every contest… so do most people abandon contest entries if they don’t win? Just curious.

Some people don’t continue there story- and some do if there really passionate about the idea!! It’s up to you, but I try and keep my entries like a short story- so there’s less pressure on me to write a WHOLE story. i just wanna write a little short one for fun

Not really, they just continue their story.

As far as I have seen a lot of authors do. :expressionless: But there are some exeptions. But even if authors do win they abandon their story, or maybe update a chapter or two and that’s it (e.g. a couple of stories in Adventurous, Queer, Squad contests). Which is sad, because there are good stories where I’d love to see what happens past 3rd or 4th chapter

Well I’m personally abandoning my FT contest entry that I did with my sister, but if my R&R one flops, I’ll continue writing it.

As someone who has been reading contest entries since the very first contest (Holiday), yes most people abandon them after the contest. Sometimes even if they win they forget about them and stop updating, and just focus on their other stories. I’m gonna ballpark and say about 70% get abandoned after the contest is over, whether they win or not

Most do, yes. Personally, my fav contest was the thriller one bc it was a requirement for the story to b finished :white_heart:

I’d say it depends! I’ve seen a lot of people abandon episode all together if they don’t win or abandon the idea! For me, I’ve entered to contests and I’m entering R&R now :joy: I completed my FT entry, because I didn’t want to have too many ongoing stories and as for my reveal, I love it, but the way I’ve constructed it, makes it very draining to write, hence slow updates!
So I’d say it totally depends BUT learning from reveal make sure that your story is actually sustainable to write in a long term!

Its a possibility, I could fill the ocean with 3 episode stories that were never finished

Some do. That’s why you read completed 3 episode contest entries. :disco:

Yes! It really annoys me when they win but don’t continue. A year later, it’s still at 3 episodes.
I understand those who don’t win, but come on, if you win, finish it!

I agree.
Just as an example Adventurous contest. There are 12 stories, two are obviously discontinued, three still on chapter 3 for almost two years, 1 on hiatus and to be fair there are also 6 complete stories :+1:
No to mention how many contest entries I still have boommarked. I dunno why I still hope those will ever be continued

If a contest entry is a collab story (written by 2 authors), I never expect it to get updated regularly if at all. Usually these authors are two people who are in very different timezones and have completely different schedules. Updating would require them to work on the story when they are both free at the same time. So these updates would never happen, if they do it would be very slow.

I think most slow down dramatically with updating losing entries or even discontinue them. Just an observation.

Note:

[cough] I’m guilty of it too.

I entered the Magicka story contest and didn’t win, but I finished the story (it’s not published yet since an overlay has to be approved).

I discontinued mine even though it got on the shelf

I think it depends on each person though, I feel like I entered the contest for the sake of it (Because I was extremely new at the time and I thought I’d try out one of the contests). So that was already a red flag, but as long as you genuinely love your story idea, I’m sure you’ll end up completing it!

I think some of them do, yea. I have way too many contest stories on my favorites list that still haven’t been updated lol
