Do readers like Custom Characterization a lot?

I’d recommend you, to not fix on the readers…fix on your story how you imagined it! It is your story and your characters! I’d think about your MC if you actually “want” that they change them. I think a story who doesn’t have CC is much more interesting, because this is how the author imagined the character for “their” story…
Hope this helped you a little

Personally, I like CC, but I don’t really care about naming the character/me. I think the author naming their characters allows them to add another layer/level the the story - and I’ve seen it done very cleverly in the past where the names mean something. On the other hand, not having CC allows the reader to see how the author imagined their characters - and that can be really nice, too.

I would read a story whether it had CC or not - I mainly care about how good the writing is.

So, essentially, if you don’t really care about how your MC looks, then put CC in, but if you do, (or you want the way a character looks to mean something to do with the plot) then don’t. It’s your story, so it’s really up to you.

I’m going to repeat what several members have already said - I’m not that fussy about what the character looks like or what they are named. As long as they are well-designed in the personality department and the writing is good then the character can literally be called “Tophat” and could be wearing nothing but hot pants and sneakers.

Lmao sounds good. Thanks for letting me know about your thoughts!

I like to CC the MC, but it won’t determine whether or not I will actually read the story. Also, if you put CC in, try to limit it to the MC and love interests because I personally don’t like customizing EVERY SINGLE minor character as well (the best friend, siblings, parents, etc)

As a POC, I’m used to not being portrayed in media. Therefore, CC isn’t as big of a deal to me. However, it’s always a plus.

Wanna know something? Most of the most popular user stories on episode don’t include cc (complicated, chain reaction, the teacher, Blake…)
It’s up to you I guess, but I’d prefer small choices. I like it when there’s art scenes and stuff, but with cc, it’s harder to do that.

I personally really like customizing my character when I’m playing a story, but I don’t like when stories let you customize every single character. I feel like that takes away from the story and doesn’t let the author create the characters themselves or give them their own personal style that goes with their personality.

Honestly? Some stories I like without customize. I’m a person very picky, when it’s comes to look.
Maybe you should allow to readers only to customize partial… Like, they can change their hair, their mouth shape, the head shape, and the nose.
But I think you should add customize at lore interests. Some readers from episode, actually prefer the love interests to look older, weird, in more ways.
At love interest, every girl has heir taste when it’s comes about boys. So, yep. I think you should add only at love interests.
And at the girl… if you want, you will add customize. You’re the author, and you have every right to choose what do you want in this story, because… Even if you give customize to readers, if the story it’s boring, they leave.
You’re the one who’s losing a lot of time, creating and creating… Having a lot of headaches, while they’re happy creating their characters.
Doesn’t matters that much the customization. When they’ll see music, choices, the story interesting, they’ll forget about customization in no time

I’m personally not a huge fan of CC because with stories that use CC, sometimes you get a huge range of options to how you want to customize your character that you begin to lose interest in the story, and more on how you want your character to look and dress like. But it is all up to you on whether or not you wish to use CC. I’m sure your story would be great regardless!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I wasn’t going to let the readers customize everyone but only the 2 MCs anyway lol I understand how annoying it can be to customize every single character.

It seems like every story starts with customization. In my opinion, I say just skip it and get into the meat of the story. The option to dress the main character every once and a while is a good substitute for those who like to have a say in what their playable character looks like.

Great idea! I love it, thank you

I personally prefer limited customization, or even no customization. As an author for example, when I create a character, I feel like I just created a person, with a real personality. I picture my characters in the best way for the story, so why would I want to change it, see my point ? And as a reader I really like to see and follow the path of a character, not the path I forced it to have. Not sure if I’m clear but yeah I’m not the biggest fan of cc x)

I don’t like cc. Sometimes it can be okay, but I never use it and only skip and let the characters be like they were created. Names however I want the author to have come up with. I usually just leave the story if I get the option to choose name because i lose some of the interest then.

My main characters are not really CC but I do allow people to change their hair and makeup through the story a few times. I will however allow people to CC a character or 2 in the story that play a major role but have no significance to me as the author. For example in my current story, the main character’s best friend is CC and she has a major part in my story. A lot of my characters, in one of my stories, come from a certain area of the world so they have those nationality traits. I try to be as realistic as possible when making characters from areas of the world, otherwise it isn’t very realistic….but I throw in a CC or two and some choices throughout for readers.
