Extended Universe or Sequel?

Hi, hello I’m Mia! I’ve been pondering this idea for a while.

Situation: You’ve created a detailed fantasy world/country/whatever! It has culture, history, traditions, fashion, taboos and you want to explore that in an episode story. So you write the first story following a protag through one part of the fantasy world. That’s all and well, but it’s finished now. So, what do you do? I’ll tell you. You write another story! It’ll be following a different character in a different region with a different personality and friends and a barely almost there connection to the past mc. So is it an Extended Universe story or a Sequel?

This isn’t my story and I don’t think I’ve seen an author whose done this but I was thinking about it so lol. Do you guys know anything like this?

Um… sorry but I don’t understand what you’re saying? You said it’s not your story that you are making a sequel/extended universe to, and not someone else’s either.

I’d say extended universe! Think of Thor and Captain America - their movies take place in the same world, but one isn’t the sequel of the other

It was just a hypothetical question. If someone makes a story then makes a separate story in the same world with different characters without a real connection to the first main character is it a sequel or extended universe?

Yeah that’s what I was thinking it’s kind of like stories that are like “you don’t have to read xyz to understand this one” I guess

It could be both I guess
I would say sequel, but that’s just because

  1. I’ve never heard “extended universe” used as a story before
  2. A sequel would attract more readers

i am writing a story like that. i’m planning on exploring my created universe with the protagonist and separating the different areas in seasons. continent 1 in Season 1 Continent 2 in Season 2 etc.
