FEATURE: supporting small authors discussion

This is what I also think. That only those stories with top retention are read,… after that they only read first chapter and they grade.
Because that gives them positive results to satisfy the public, but in the same time they miss out what’s happening in next chapters and they don’t see if stories fit the theme.

Contest shelves are normally up for two weeks. This one disappeared very quickly

One would be able to get an estimate of their story score from everything else. Tbh, I think it would boil down to reader engagement, theme, & TOS. Some may have had high rubric scores but poor reader engagement etc.

Also, anyone would enough time on their hands to convert a pdf table to a sortable format/calculate an estimate of their story scores as well as everyone else’s (in order to find out who came last)…well the joke’s on them :D. But yeah, like Alex said it’s important to get some clear clarification the current system.

To be fair though, the pilot is everything. Same applies to the first few pages of a novel, a screenplay, or a script when the powers that be are deciding whether or not it’s worth their time. Think about when you watch a new TV show; you pretty much decide whether or not you want to continue after the first episode (if not the first few minutes)

Yeah. Do you think it’s because some of the negative feedback some of the authors who won have gotten?

Just a tip. You might want to compile all the ideas and create a Google Doc where you can list all the best ones in order to keep this organized. :v:

@EliseC the last few contests have only been up for a week.

No. Spotlight was definitely up for two. Star Power was up for two. And I’m pretty sure Haunted was too? Every time there was a second shelf which came up for the second week, but the contest shelf was still there. The only shelf which wasn’t up for two weeks was Dream Job and people complained.

I just feel like if we want to see our scores for the sake of transparency, then we would need to see all of them. Otherwise, what’s going to stop someone from saying “I got really high scores in directing and choices. I know my plot was good so the contest must be rigged.”

Agreed, we need clarification otherwise we’re getting nowhere really lol.

Oh, maybe just on some apps then. I only had the last few contests since dream job for a week. I definitely remember I only had Haunted for a week as my story was there so of course I had a vested interest in how long it was up for :joy:

Ahahaa yeah maybe? I have noticed that iOS and android devices sometimes get things differently :unamused:
Yeah that’s why I questioned the Haunted one since I figured you would know lol but I’m fairly certain I had that one for two weeks :woman_shrugging:

I’ve only been around since the Cupids Arrow contest really. Only ever had them a week. Occasionally I’ve had general shelves for two weeks (drop down underneath the newest one) but contests only ever a week. Always thought it odd. But yes I’m android so maybe that’s why.

Same timing for me as well and with the exception of Dream Job and this contest, I’ve had them all for two weeks (ipad) but occasionally I use my android phone to check things and have noticed that my shelves are different. I didn’t have the Black History Month shelf very long on my phone.
That’s very odd. I feel like it should be two weeks for contests on all devices since there should be an extra benefit to being a contest winner than just being on a weekly shelf (in my opinion).

Yeah. Like I understand they want to do other shelfs like the one with the male MC and Black History Month but I feel like a week is not long enough. I think two weeks is better especially since there’s usually months between contests anyways. But that’s just my opinion.

Well, they do have a permanent section and that is a real perk. But it comes back to why you write in the first place. For the glory, or for the passion. Don’t get me wrong, winning is a wonderful feeling. But without the passion, glory for me would be hollow. If you can’t get enjoyment from just the love of writing, then for me, there’s no point. Just my thoughts.

Oh I agree. I don’t write to win. I mean it’s nice, but I’d write stories whether there were contests or not. I just feel like a contest win should be a little more “special” than being on a weekly shelf. I know we get that other permanent section, but it isn’t really the same. Of course, this is just my opinion, but when I came to the app I always saw the contest entries for two weeks so I guess that’s just something I expect? lol. But it always seemed fair to me- you win a contest and you get two weeks on a shelf as opposed to one.

After 2 weeks contest winners are moved to another shelf- User Stories- Contest Winners and they stay there “forever”.

But the winners from H & V are not there yet.

Yeah, but it’s only been a week. Usually the contest winners shelf stays up for two weeks (at least on my app) :woman_shrugging:. I’m just surprised to see it gone already.

I personally find it weird that winners are announced on the creators’ account & not on the main one.

But that’s completely irrelevant & probably my last thought before I drift off to sleep

Normally takes a week or so for them to add the contest stories to a winners shelf there.
