I am writing a fantasy story regarding faeries and their world, world-building is harder than I thought it was people!!! I’m just taking my own spin at this, I’m doing it for my pleasure and trying to have fun with it.
What I need help with is some extra characters, names for certain things, and fantasy creatures that I could include in this story.
Plot:The MC discovers a whole new world she didn’t know existed and gets stuck there for the foreseeable future, having been the only human who has ever discovered the Faerie world before and the reason how she got there remains a mystery, the faerie lord of the summer court decides to keep her prisoner (with benefits) in order for the faerie realm to remain a secret. She is allowed to roam freely around the court and to have her own room but she can never leave, not that she’d be able to with guards posted at every corner of the estate. MC must manage to keep herself alive in this new world while the faerie are doing the same. With new evils arriving and making appearances she helps the summer court battle them. She also learns that new evils are being created by Lilet, the evil sorceress with her hands on the (creator of all things)
The Creator – I’m trying to find an actual name/title for this. It’s basically the thing that everything in the Fae-Realm is formed from.
And if you guys can help me with events/traditions/ or holidays that faeries may celebrate I’d be very grateful because I’ve been having trouble coming up with ideas for that.
Okay, by faeries you mean magical creatures or just “fairies”?
And the advantage of writing fictional stories is that you can do anything. No one will judge you as long as you don’t bring up something related to reality. Like you can’t introduce traditions which aren’t usually practised on a festival in real world. But you can take examples from the reality and make similar traditions and cultural practices. For example if you read the “Throne of Glass series” by Sarah J Maas, you’ll find there are several holidays and festivals which are actually like the ones we have in reality but have a different name, purpose and a few extra details to make it creative.
I hope I didn’t confuse you further.
The hardest part of writing a fantasy story is coming up with names. I’m facing the same problem actually. Naming places, characters, coming up with last names, etc are really pain in the *ss. There are many name generator sites which are sometimes may give you stupid names but if you’re lucky you may find what you are looking for. Besides, you can ask in the Episode community. The amazing people here are really helpful and creative and can help you come up with names and all.
Coming to fantasy creatures, I usually use the fictional creatures we all are already familiar with, such as dragons/Wyverns, hippogriff, unicorn, pixies to name a few. If you come up with new creatures try naming them based on their appearance or character.
Oh. It’s by SJM too. I haven’t read it but I am familiar with the characters. So by faeries you meant Fae? But the thing is, how are you going to show their typical Fae characteristics, like pointed ears and all? Will you use overlays?
P.S. I know it’s out of topic but actually I was also wishing to add Fae in my story. That’s why I want to know. Hope you don’t mind.
That’s fine! But I’m glad you brought that up because I’ve been so busy planning the story I haven’t thought about showing the fact they’re fae when it comes to actually writing the story in Episode. The overlay thing sounds like a good idea but also a lot more coding goes into that, right?
Exactly! The code will become very complex. Plus if there is customization you will have to make overlays for each skin color separately. And it may look weird too as you need to scale it properly.
