When I think of names, I usually think of the personalities of the characters first. Since each character is supposed to be unique and memorable for each story, having a specialized name can aid that.

So if you have a character that is serene and calm even in the midst of danger, but fierce when protecting people she/he cares about, you may name him or her using a word representing moon or ocean.

I hope this helps.
