If you’re so diddly darn offended, you have the ability to write your own stories ya know
America is suppose to be a melting pot of diffrent races. Dont be ignorant white shouldnt be the default all races should be represented
I don’t think this is a fair comment. Within reason, anyone - regardless of whether they write or not - should be able to discuss these issues without being called oversensitive. People of color are commenting on issues that affect them very personally. It isn’t unfair or unreasonable of them to grow tired of feeling misrepresented and treated as an afterthought.
It’s not like Episode doesn’t have any darker skin tones at all
That would be messed up
And only 3 or 4 nude/natrual lip colors for LL
Not really?
Yes ppl have literally counted

So wanting matching lip colors is complaining?
MC for my first story is from the Caribbean
She has darker skin and the lip colors I use for her look really nice
I’m assuming that’s the default lip color of the character or someone was just lazy
I’ve counted too-
Why are you making excuses and being dismissive af
I’m not here to fight or rant or anything
That’s not my style
I’m not-
I was just saying
Not only blacks, asian and Pakistani people as well. And if i don’t have the choice to customize my MC he/she will most likely be a really white person with a bigass nose.
In the story i’m currently working on i let the reader customize the best friend, MC, and LI
Minor problems - like mismatching lip colors - can be indicative of larger issues and hurts. If you don’t feel a need to see yourself in stories, that’s fine. Everyone is different and what kinds of representation people need can vary wildly from person to person. The kinds of characters I needed two years ago, even, are very different from the ones I need now.
The real issue is that labeling things like this as just being meaningless complaints is going to come off to other people as dismissive and hurtful, regardless of how you intended it.
It doesn’t have to be intentional to be hurtful. What readers care about is how authors respond to the mistake (if they’re new and inexperienced) or what they do in future stories and if they correct the coding (regarding official stories).
I don’t think Episode meant to code the wrong lip color at all either - which is why people are upset. They feel like afterthoughts because the coding in various official stories only works the way it’s supposed to if you customize yourself as light-skinned. And, from what I’ve seen, never fixed it after it was brought to their attention.
Let me put it this way. If somebody fell on me and broke my arm, I would certainly feel differently than how I would if they had intentionally tried to break it. So, yes, intentions matter to a degree. But at the same time, if somebody broke my arm and that same person didn’t apologize or try to help me in any way, then (their lack of) actions and words would matter more than their intentions. That’s what I’m trying to get at.
You said “it sort of does though” which is what I understood as being a response to “it doesn’t have to be intentional to be hurtful.” If you understood what I meant, then I’ve said my peace.
In my story I always make the family members customizable as well, this way if you do choose how you would like your family to look to. I think this is good because if you are mixed or if your family members have different skin colours to you, you can make them look how you want. But yes I agree, if you are going to make a customizable story that involves that characters family, make sure they aren’t literally the opposite race.
