How do I make custom backgrounds? 🧐

Hi guys!

Just to make it clear, I am not asking about drawn backgrounds - I can not draw to save my life :disappointed:

Thus, I would like to know about the resources, apps and stuff like that - if anyone could share some tips I would be very grateful!

I can suggest websites and free programs that you can use if you need them. I started making backgrounds a few months ago. It’s definitely a learning process of trial and error.

I feel like it would be easy to just put an anime filter on a real image :man_shrugging:

thats fine to do if you have a perfect background (but sometimes you cant) and the filter isnt copyrighted in any way, but then youd still have to make overlays for that background you just made

If you need a drawn background somehow I can gladly do it for you! Here is my IG: @aimeestories. I draw and edit a lot of backgrounds and overlays for my stories!

are good resources for higher quality photograph images and have tons to sift through

I use GIMP (free program that functions almost exactly like photoshop) I added the G’MIC plug-in to it so that I could take advantage of the ton of artistic/color/repairing/etc filters they have. Both are 100% free programs. I also recommend Ghostscript for it-- makes working with psd files easier with GIMP.

Summary

Pro tip: take your time with learning what each tool can do. Makes using them a lot easier later when you don’t have to search for them. Also, on every jpeg image, right-click, select layer then transparency and click Add Alpha Channel. << makes cutting stuff out of them easier.
Last tip: When you open a new doc, it has a dropdown menu that allows you to select background color-- just pick transparent; especially if you are going to be building a background from scratch.

There are also a ton of youtube tutorials for working with Gimp.
