How do I stop overlay from appearing on screen first?

If it won’t do it with the background, maybe use & signs instead.
So, your script would look something like:

INT. INTRO
&overlay INTRO_WORD create
&overlay INTRO_WORD opacity 1
&overlay INTRO_WORD shifts to 4 580
&overlay INTRO_WORD scales to 0.557

@pause for 2

@overlay INTRO_WORD shifts to 4 72 in 2
