How do you add the same overlay more than once?

I have dinner plates I am trying to add to my scene… But everytime I add the same overlay more than once, I can only edit one of them. Am I doing something wrong or do I have to add the same overlay to “my overlays” with different names?

:blush:

Thank you!!! :slight_smile:

So I did this but it’s not working :frowning: They’re not even coming up…

INT. CONNERDINING with CONNERTABLE with BREAKFASTPLATE with FRUITPLATE with PLATE with PANCAKES with OJ with MUFFIN1 with MILK with BOWL1 with CAKE with COFFEE with MUFFIN2 with DOUGHNUTS with MUFFIN3 with CEREAL3 with CEREAL with PLATE_2 create from PLATE with PLATE_3 create from PLATE with PLATE_4 create from PLATE with PLATE_5 create from PLATE with PLATE_6 create from PLATE with COFFEE_2 create from COFFEE with COFFEE_3 create from COFFEE with COFFEE_4 create from COFFEE with COFFEE_5 create from COFFEE with COFFEE_6 create from COFFEE

OK, so you need to:

Remember that you must add the shifts, scales, and opacity commands for all overlays when using the create command.

@overlay NAME create
@overlay NAME shifts to X Y in zone # in T
@overlay NAME scales to % % in T
@overlay NAME opacity # in T

@overlay NAME_2 create from NAME
@overlay NAME_2 shifts to X Y in zone # in T
@overlay NAME_2 scales to % % in T
@overlay NAME_2 opacity # in T

What they mean (repost from Dara’s animating and placing overlays thread):

NAME is the overlay name
x coordinate is where the overlay is placed on the screen horizontally (side to side)
y coordinate is where the overlay is placed on the screen vertically (up and down)
% is the scale size
T stands for time in seconds
# - means “number”

Example from Dara’s thread:

NAME = CAR ANGLE SILVER
x= 220
y = 85
% = 1.5
T = 0
# = in zone “3” ; also the opacity (1)

@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER create
@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER shifts to 220 85 in zone 3 in 0
@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER scales to 1.5 1.5 in 0
@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER opacity 1 in 0

@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER_2 create from CAR ANGLE SILVER
@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER_2 shifts to 220 85 in zone 3 in 0
@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER_2 scales to 1.5 1.5 in 0
@overlay CAR ANGLE SILVER_2 opacity 1 in 0

*both overlays will be on top of each other as they share the same coordinates and are the same overlays (use the overlay helper to move the second duplicated overlay to a new position and enter in the coordinates)

They’re not even popping up for me to be able to place them… I wrote it like this too and it’s still not working…

You need to add the opacity commands for each overlay.

Ex.
@overlay PLATE_2 create from PLATE
@overlay PLATE_2 shifts to X Y in zone 1
@overlay PLATE_2 scales to % %
@overlay PLATE_2 moves to layer 2
@overlay PLATE_2 opacity 1 in 0

It’s fine to write this too:

@overlay PLATE_2 create from PLATE
@overlay PLATE_2 opacity 1 in 0

Kayla, let us know how it goes :+1:

P.S If you read the thread I linked above it says, word for word:

The create overlay command
This is used when you want to add an overlay in the middle of the scene.

NOTE: To use this command you have to add in opacity command to make the overlay appear in your scene. You can learn about opacity down below.

@overlay OVERLAYNAME create
@overlay OVERLAYNAME opacity 1 in 0

I ended up just uploading the same overlay a couple times and doing it that way. I’m sorry I got so confused on how to do it the other way! Thank you so much for your help though!

Has this been solved? If so, you might want to close this with a Mod.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you get the hang of it soon, remember to practice and try it out on your own a few times and soon you’ll be whizzing through :blush:

OK, I thought I’d write it one more time using just one overlay:

INT. BACKGROUND with PLATE

@overlay PLATE_2 create from PLATE
@overlay PLATE_2 opacity 1 in 0

NARR
Cool, a second plate was created and now I can use the overlay helper to move it around, so very cool.

No I was still in a conversation with @JemU776?

I really appreciate the help and will definitely keep working on it in my practice script!! :slight_smile:
