Did you do the background as an overlay to fade the characters?

No, I used the @overlay OVERLAY opacity command.

Oh ok cause I wanted to do that for my characters but I read the only way to do that was to use a background as an overlay then layer the character and change the opacity.

If you want the characters to be animated, then that is the only way to do it. I just cut mine out and made them into overlays.

I use GIMP, but you can pretty much use any image editing software.
