So, as I am writing a story right now, I am curious as to what kind of customization everyone is interested in.
I know that a lot of people have different opinions and standards when it comes to what their character needs to look like, while others, not so much.
This poll was made so I can see what kind of customization to give and when to give it throughout the story.
The poll is just for what kind of customization you want…
Limited, full cc. no cc, limited cc, but with skin tone availability, etc…
Anything else, including recommendations that you would like to have,
tell me in the comment section so I can get a good idea what everyone likes when it comes to other things within a good story.
What kind of Customization do you Prefer?
- Full CC
- Limited CC
- No CC
- Limited CC with some skin color choices
- Doesn’t matter to me
- Other

This is a good question, for any author. I think, at least personally, that it depends on what else is contained in the particular story. I prefer full CC, but this is my full preferences:
-
Warning if there are art scenes
-
Limit the CC to still look like the character in the art scene
-
Warning or no options if a particular physical feature in a character will be mentioned (ex: “your eyes are so blue”)

I don’t mind whether or not a story has CC, but if it does, I prefer if it had full cc and not limited cc. But that’s really just my personal opinion lol

I find that limited to no CC stories are often the most intriguing for me. As a writer, when you limit some of the reader’s control over the characters, you give yourself more room to develop them the way you want them to develop.
And as a reader, if I decide to spend tickets on a story, it’s because the plot sounds interesting to me. To then have to customize 1-5 characters before continuing the chapter really deters me from a story. Also, I find that stories that focus heavily on cc for the mc and other characters are often lacking in the personality department. If the point is to have the reader feel like they are a part of the story, then it’s pointless if the mc does not behave the way I would behave. In fact, seeing someone who looks like me do the opposite of what I would do in a given situation has the reverse effect. A story with physical CC needs to have an equal or greater amount of emotional or mental CC (choices/branches that make the character more extroverted or introverted, decide whether they deal with situations head-on or push problems aside, etc.) for me to feel engaged—which is, of course, a lot of coding. I would feel more connected to an mc who looks nothing like me if I could shape their personality and reactions.
So for me, personally, I would rather read a story with an mc who the author has created and who already has a distinguishable personality. I know that’ll be a huge turn off for other readers though.

Thats awesome! Good to know!
This is my preference, too. Mostly I want to read the authors’ stories as they wrote them, not make a self-insert to star in a plot with a totally generic MC. Even if there is full CC, I usually will leave whatever the default is, or maybe change one or two features if they bug me a lot. I remember one story I read recently had an MC who looked a lot like me already, and then in the story she was soooooo not like me and that disconnect made me stop reading altogether. So now I actually customize to look LESS like me!
