How Much Customization do you Prefer?

I find that limited to no CC stories are often the most intriguing for me. As a writer, when you limit some of the reader’s control over the characters, you give yourself more room to develop them the way you want them to develop.

And as a reader, if I decide to spend tickets on a story, it’s because the plot sounds interesting to me. To then have to customize 1-5 characters before continuing the chapter really deters me from a story. Also, I find that stories that focus heavily on cc for the mc and other characters are often lacking in the personality department. If the point is to have the reader feel like they are a part of the story, then it’s pointless if the mc does not behave the way I would behave. In fact, seeing someone who looks like me do the opposite of what I would do in a given situation has the reverse effect. A story with physical CC needs to have an equal or greater amount of emotional or mental CC (choices/branches that make the character more extroverted or introverted, decide whether they deal with situations head-on or push problems aside, etc.) for me to feel engaged—which is, of course, a lot of coding. I would feel more connected to an mc who looks nothing like me if I could shape their personality and reactions.

So for me, personally, I would rather read a story with an mc who the author has created and who already has a distinguishable personality. I know that’ll be a huge turn off for other readers though.
