In my experience, thoroughly developed characters, and distinguishable character voices are essential for spotlight stories. It’s important you focus more on dialogue and narration quality. I’d recommend reading through your favourite books, and analyzing what techniques your favourite authors have utilized to efficiently make you, as the reader feel something and become engaged with the plot.
