What you already should understand at last in basic for this tutorial:

1) how to use layers
2) how to create, scale, and move overlays
3) how to spot direct and walk while using spot directing and how to walk while doing idle animation
3) how to use & and @


Understanding the horizontal and vertical coordinates:

moving overlay together with character smoothly requires that they both move the SAME DISTANCE in the SAME TIME

While the time is I guess clear :smiley:, the distance in the spot directing is bit tricky so lets look deeper in to it.

Character uses spot number and overlay shift numbers โ€“ they are in principle both the same - they tell us the HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL coordinates of the character or overlay on the screen

Example

@CHAR1 spot 0.956 156 36 in zone 2

@overlay CABRI_WHITE shifts to 251 -98 in zone 3

The example above relates to the picture you see above - the girl in a cabriolet.

For moving the car horizontally we will keep the same height = the same vertical coordinate and the same goes for the girl.

So letโ€™s say we will move them for 100 horizontally = the new spot / shift would be:

@CHAR1 spot 0.956 256 36 in zone 2

@overlay CABRI_WHITE shifts to 351 -98 in zone 3

To make them actually really move together in time we will write it like this:

&CHAR1 walks to spot 0.956 256 36 in zone 2 in 2 AND CHAR1 does it while idle_sit_neutral_loop
@overlay CABRI_WHITE shifts to 351 -98 in zone 3 in 2


How to count the distance?

Most of the time however you will not know the exact number you need them to shift and you will need to count it.
Itโ€™s especially tricky if you move over more zones or if you need to move from/to offscreen position where you cant see if you set the overlay and character right.

So letโ€™s explain this in an example.

I want the scene to start in zone 1.
The car is offscreen.
Then the car drives to zone 2 while the pan is happening and the car stops in zone 2

So letโ€™s first set the spotting for zone 2 where the car stops and we can easily set both car and the character to the right size and right spot:

&overlay CABRI_WHITE moves to layer 2
&overlay CABRI_WHITE shifts to 251 -98 in zone 3

&overlay CABRI_WHITE opacity 1
@CHAR1 spot 0.956 156 36 in zone 2 AND CHAR1 faces right AND CHAR1 moves to layer 1 AND CHAR1 is idle_sit_neutral_loop

After you have, it cut to zone 1 and move the overlay of the car offscreen - it might happen that as you move it you will not be able to keep the vertical number 100% the same - if so simply change it in the script manually.

so this is my position of the offscreen car:
@overlay 6202847361105920_CABRI_WHITE shifts to 28 -98 in zone 1

so the car will move from 28 -98 in zone 1 to 251 -98 in zone 3

each zone is 320 vide

So lets do the math
zone 1 = (320-28) = 292
zone2 = 320
zone 3 = 251

Total: 863

And now we have to count the starting point of the character which will be in the exact same distance

So the Character endpoint is
@CHAR1 spot 0.956 156 36 in zone 2

159 -863 = -704

So the starting spot is

@CHAR1 spot 0.956 -704 36 in zone 2
(notice that the zone number stays the same - if you would want to transform it to zone 1 you would have to reduce it for 320 but its not necessary to do it since the script understand both and knows it is the same spot)
