HOW TO: phonecall with two backgrounds - split screen, facetime

Here is a step by step tutorial on how to make phonecall with both characters on the scene each with different background:
ezgif.com-gif-maker

First of all we will need to change one of our backgrounds to an overlay.

As you see you see only smal part of the backgrounds so use any picture editing program (like photoshop) to cut out part of the background and save it as png.

In my example the overlay is on the right side - and I wanted the guy stand next to the window so this is how my overlay looks like:

you will need to spot the overlay in the middle of the scene - if you have reset zoom and the overlay is on the right side than the spot for the middle of the screen is

@overlay OVERAYNAME shifts to 160 0 in zone 1

If you have zoomed you will have to adjust it manually.

You will need to set the characters and the overlay to layers

put character which stands on the background on layer 1
overlay on layer 2
and the character who stands in front of the overlay on layer 3

(when you spot them try to spot them so that they will not go over the middle part)

Here is example of the stage you see at the picture:

INT. ISLAND BEDROOM - DAY
&zoom reset

&overlay ROOM create
&overlay ROOM moves to layer 2
&overlay ROOM shifts to 160 0 in zone 1
&overlay ROOM opacity 1

&CHAR1 spot 1.064 74 114 in zone 1
&CHAR1 moves to layer 1
&CHAR1 faces right
&CHAR1 is talk_phone_excited_loop

&CHAR2 spot 1.163 248 100 in zone 1
&CHAR2 moves to layer 3
&CHAR2 faces left
@CHAR2 is listen_phone_confused

If you want to make it more fancy you can make the overlay and the second character to slide to the scene

For this you need to spot both the overlay and the character of-screen,
To ensure they will move together simultaneously you must spot the character and the overlay in the exact same distance from the final spot.

The easiest way how to do it is to spot them in the other zone on the same coordinates:

INT. ISLAND BEDROOM - DAY
&zoom reset

&overlay ROOM create
&overlay ROOM moves to layer 2
&overlay ROOM shifts to 160 0 in zone 2
&overlay ROOM opacity 1

&CHAR1 spot 1.064 74 114 in zone 1
&CHAR1 moves to layer 1
&CHAR1 faces right
&CHAR1 is talk_phone_excited_loop

&CHAR2 spot 1.163 248 100 in zone 2
&CHAR2 moves to layer 3
&CHAR2 faces left

and then move them simultaneously to the final position

You will need to walk the character while doing idle animation so it will look like he stands in the room on one place while you actually move him

if you do not know the command it is:

&CHAR2 walks to spot X X X in zone X in X AND CHAR2 does it while idle_animation

because the characters stop the animation after he is on the place I recommend to add
THEN CHAR2 is idle_animation

So he will stay in the animation he was before.

And here is the final script example with all together

ezgif.com-gif-maker

INT. ISLAND BEDROOM - DAY
&zoom reset

&overlay ROOM create
&overlay ROOM moves to layer 2
&overlay ROOM shifts to 160 0 in zone 2
&overlay ROOM opacity 1

&CHAR1 spot 1.064 74 114 in zone 1
&CHAR1 moves to layer 1
&CHAR1 faces right
&CHAR1 is listen_phone_sigh

&CHAR2 spot 1.163 248 100 in zone 2
&CHAR2 moves to layer 3
&CHAR2 faces left
@CHAR2 is listen_phone_confused

&CHAR2 walks to spot 1.163 248 100 in zone 1 in 3 AND CHAR2 does it while listen_phone_confused THEN CHAR2 is listen_phone_confused
@overlay ROOM shifts to 160 0 in zone 1 in 3

Here is another example - overlay shifts this time from the bottom:
splitscreen

here is the overlay used in this example:

And here is the template:

INT. PREP ACADEMY - DAY

&overlay SPLITSCREEN create
&overlay SPLITSCREEN moves to layer 2
&overlay SPLITSCREEN shifts to 0 -570 in zone 1
&overlay SPLITSCREEN moves to layer 2
&overlay SPLITSCREEN opacity 1
&CHAR2 spot 1.316 78 46 in zone 1 AND CHAR2 faces right AND CHAR2 moves to layer 1
@CHAR1 spot 1.235 232 -572 in zone 1 AND CHAR1 faces left AND CHAR1 moves to layer 3
@CHAR2 is listen_phone_happy_loop
&overlay SPLITSCREEN shifts to 0 -78 in zone 1 in 3
@CHAR1 walks to spot 1.235 232 -80 in zone 1 in 3 AND CHAR1 does it while think_rubchin AND CHAR1 faces left
@CHAR1 is deepbreath
@CHAR1 is read_phone_shocked
@pause for 1
@speechbubble is 110 185 to 100% with tail_top_right
@CHAR1 is listen_phone_confused
CHAR1 (talk_phone_surprised)
Yes?

And here is simple example of FACETIME

you need overlay with cut out window - like this:

And the script to this scene:

INT. AUDITORIUM BACKSTAGE - DAY with FACETIME at layer 2
@CHAR1 spot 1.622 91 -124 in zone 1 AND CHAR1 faces right AND CHAR1 moves to layer 1
@CHAR2 spot 4.106 193 -1553 in zone 1 AND CHAR2 faces left AND CHAR2 moves to layer 3

Exactly just cut it as needed save it as PNG and upload it as an overlay

How do you direct the ending of the call? for the diagonal split screen phone call?

the same way as the beginning - you just walk the character down to the “starting position” and simultaneously you shift the overlay down to the starting position - the principle is identical and moving them up - you just move them down.

How do I do that? Could you give me an example?

I’m not sure if I understand the question - how do you do what? shifting an overlay?

if so, here is more in detail explained how you can animate overlays
