:blob_hearts: HOW TO: Use A Built-In Overlay :blob_hearts:

Some backgrounds have a built in overlay. When dealing with these backgrounds, when you place character(s) into the scene, they will always be behind the built in overlay. In order to have the character(s) in front of the overlay you’ll need to use the background name as an overlay:

INT. BACKGROUND PLUS OL with INT. BACKGROUND PLUS OL at layer #
#place characters into the scene and add a layer to them

By the way, OL is short for overlay :rose:

Here are 2 example codes using backgrounds that have built in overlays:

1.

A. Not adding the built in overlay to the background (everything will be behind it):

INT. CAFE OL - DAY

&zoom reset

&speechbubble reset

#The character will be behind the built in overlay no matter what

&JEM spot 1.280 90 -107 AND JEM faces right AND JEM is idle

NARR
Scene.

Visual

B. Adding the built in overlay with the background and assigning it to a layer:

INT. CAFE OL - DAY with INT. CAFE OL - DAY at layer 1

&zoom reset

&speechbubble reset

#The character will be in front of the built in overlay in this example (she’s at a higher layer)

&JEM spot 1.280 165 -116 AND JEM moves to layer 2 AND JEM faces right AND JEM is idle

NARR

OK, so I made a post on built in overlays here:

And provided more information here:

In regards to the second post talking about more information on built in overlays, here are the full example codes I used. You can copy and paste it into a random Episode story and test it out (but in regards to the custom background, I uploaded one created by the lovely FlowerGriefer and used that, you can use another existing background you have):

INT. CAFE OL - DAY with INT. CAFE OL - DAY at layer 1

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 175 389 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.280 98 -148 AND YOU moves to layer 3 AND YOU faces right

NARR
We added the built in overlay with the background it came with.

&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY to layer 5

NARR
Now we assigned the built in overlay to a new layer.

INT. CAFE OL - DAY

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 175 389 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.280 98 -148 AND YOU moves to layer 7 AND YOU faces right

NARR
Instead of adding the overlay with the background name, what happens if we just assign a layer for it somewhere under the background and nothing else?

&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY to layer 5

NARR
We assigned it to layer 5, but uh oh! You may notice that you get a warning saying your overlay hasn’t been created first. You will need to add it to the background name instead.

INT. CAFE OL - DAY with INT. CAFE OL - DAY to 1.000 330 -1 in zone 1 at layer 2

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 175 389 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.280 165 -116 in zone 1 at layer 3 AND YOU faces right

NARR
We gave different coordinates for the built in overlay (for this specific code, it places the overlay offscreen).

INT. SHIPCABIN - DAY with INT. CAFE OL - DAY at layer 3

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 175 389 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.262 92 -167 in zone 1 at layer 5 AND YOU faces right

NARR
Here we assigned the built in overlay from a different background into another background that also comes in with a built in overlay.

NARR
What we see happen is the built in overlay that came with INT. SHIPCABIN - DAY disappears and instead the INT. CAFE OL - DAY overlay is here.

&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY to layer 7

NARR
We assigned a built in overlay to a higher layer.

INT. SHIPCABIN - DAY

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 175 389 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.262 271 -167 in zone 1 at layer 5 AND YOU faces right

&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY create
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY scales to 1.000 1.000
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY shifts to 0 0
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY to layer 3
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY opacity 1 in 0

NARR
Instead of adding the built in overlay from another background with the background name, I use the create command for it.

NARR
When I do this, INT. SHIPCABIN - DAY’s built in overlay is still in the scene instead of disappearing.

EXT. FLOWERGRIER CRUISE02

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 164 226 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.280 169 -77 in zone 1 at layer 5 AND YOU faces right

&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY create
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY scales to 1.000 1.000
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY shifts to 0 0
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY to layer 3
&overlay INT. CAFE OL - DAY opacity 1 in 0

NARR
Here I use my own custom background that I uploaded into the backgrounds section and use the create command to add in the built in overlay.

NARR
You can add built in overlays into custom backgrounds and backgrounds that don’t come with a built in overlay.

EXT. FLOWERGRIER CRUISE02 with INT. CAFE OL - DAY at layer 3

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 164 226 to 100%

&YOU spot 1.280 169 -77 in zone 1 at layer 5 AND YOU faces right

NARR
For my custom background (one that doesn’t come in with a built overlay) I add the built in overlay with the background name. This is honestly pretty cool.

EXT. FLOWERGRIER CRUISE02 with INT. CAFE OL - DAY to 1.157 -46 129 at layer 3 with INT. SHIPCABIN - DAY to 1.023 9 0 at layer 4 with PHOTO FRAME at layer 6

&zoom reset

&speechbubble is 179 420 to 89%

&YOU spot 1.280 169 -77 in zone 1 at layer 5 AND YOU faces right

NARR
In this scene, I’ve added two built in overlays that come from different backgrounds into my custom background along with another overlay. Go crazy with these ; )
