I was thinking about putting a joke referring to a book in my story but I was wondering if I would get copyrighted
You can use names/brands in passing but not as a “driving” point in the story, so I think you’d be safe to make a quick joke about a book.
Okay, thank you! I just wanted to be safe then have my story get copyrighted when I publish it.
No problem and it’s definitely a valid concern. lol But just remember that a brand/real person/name of something copyrighted can be used in passing conversation but it can’t be like " Suzy’s dream is to be a character on Grey’s Anatomy and now she has her chance to work with THE Meredith Grey! Will she make it through the rigorous competition to secure the only role available?" lol It can’t be the focus or goal or driving force in your story.
Moved to Creator’s Corner since this is about story creation. Make sure to check out our Forum Tutorial for more info about creating topics, and feel free to PM me if you’ve got questions.
If you’re worried, you can always change up some names to something similar to what you want to make a joke about. Although you shouldn’t have to worry if the reference is just for a joke, rather than as a driving point of your story. (Just as @/ColeCatalyst explained.) : )
