Have you tried writing your story from beginning to ending on paper?

Also are you making things up as you go?

not really I have my plot as well as my ideas on a word doc

Maybe try to add some extra background scenes. Scenes that help describe your characters more (possibly).

Yea I agree I know I can’t talk cause people say the same and worse about my story but I like stories where I get a scope on the characters past/background and scenes with side characters

okk should I just dedicate the first chapter to getting to know the characters? or is that to much

You can maybe spread it out. Really depends on what you’re going for.

I say do a little of both layout a little background but as the story progresses get to know more about them

Hi this is very common when people start writing. Because you know the main scennes so it is natural to go from one to another. But reader preceives this as too fast and confuzing. What I recomand… go for story which was really catchy for you and reread it. But this time studdy the story.
You will realize that there is not thet much of the main plot in the 1 chapter but lot of dialogues which are not always 100% related to the main plot line. Like having the chit chat at breakfast with family… but such filling scenes are essential. First of all you can naturally introduce the characters and their relationships to other characters and their personality naturally this way. And second it will give time to reader to know the characters and have opinion on them.

For example if MC is new in town going to new school is shy and has great relationship with parents or if she lives whole life in this town is rebelious and has bad relationship with parents … all that can be easily shown to a reader by the breakfast dialogue and you will even not need any narrator to introduce MC.

thank you xx

I haven’t read your story, so I dont know if what you are doing is slide show syndrome , or didn’t lay all your cards. but I am gonna explain both

Slide show syndrome

the story runs like a slide show.
This is is where we meet
This scene is our first date
Here is first kiss
And here we break up
the scene jump from place to place, nothing is holding them together, its like a story there have a plot but no smooth transition between what is happening. and the events are not connected.

didnt show all cards

for some people unleash you spit out there entire backstory in chapter 1 they think its too slow. not understanding that information is something you get while reading.

example I had a review not long ago on my new story, and was told it is too fast paced, and when I ask about it, she told me she would have liked to know some things,
Like how the royal family died
how MC mother died,
How the king knew her mother.
And more scenes where we learn about MC

those aren’t things I have ignored to explain they are hocks, setting questions you want answered to keep you reading.
as an author you need to set questions there keep the reader reading, and if all questions is answered in chapter 1 why would you keep reading?

and for MC its a first impression. you dont know everything about MC in one chapter, for writhing its show dont tell, I am not gonna stop and give a narrative description on what MC’s life is like, I show you what you need to know, at that point,

glad to hear that.

please remeber not matter how good your story is, someone will not like something about it.
sometimes I been told multiple times, I love this thing by readers, then one person say they dont like it, and then I considre to change evrything, despite many others love it.
