I’d really like to see some different povs for this.
As an artist (or anyone generally ever requesting art) do you find it fair to cancel a request if you have already started it if, for example, the person requesting hasn’t gotten back to you for more than 48 hours, or they are not giving enough details? Just some examples, obviously, but thought I’d get some opinions

You for sure have the right to cancel a request. In situation where someone isn’t responding my advice is to pause the request first. You don’t know what’s going on for them. And if they don’t give you enough details and they won’t message you back. You just tell them you won’t continue their request until they respond or give them a said amount of time to respond before you cancel their request
Edit:
You’re the artist, you have the right to decline and cancel any request if you have your reasons to. But always let the person know why you declined/canceled their request.

you do have a right to cancel a request or continue with another one with an active replier until the other person replies, you should put a deadline instead though (for example if the person doesnt reply for 2-3 days, you’d cancel it)
idrk if that made sense , but youre the artist and youre in charge, not the replier. so you do have a right to cancel or pause the request.

I gave a deadline of 24 hours, but waited 2 days before sending the message that I cancel the request. I just felt like it was a rushed decision maybe? That was why I made the post, so thank you everyone for the replies!

At this point you should just cancel the request. You gave them a deadline. waited even longer than that. And who knows how long it might take before they ever respond. And if they do you can discuss if you’re still willing to do the request or tell them to find someone else.

I always state my conditions and make them agree before doing anything.
For time: I use 48h too but sometimes I wait a bit longer. Recently I had to cancel something as it had been 16 days and I texted every 7. But canceling if the person is not responding is the best outcome.
As for details: check everything before you start the request: all character deets, pics, examples and ask for more immediately.
And this could probably be another reason for canceling.

As for the details, I checked everything, but when I zoomed at the close up, a noticed a tiny line of silver, but didn’t see earrings anywhere in the outfits, so I asked and was basically ghosted. I definitely need to start adding conditions, thank you for the recommendation!

I just texted to say I will need to delay as I had some problems. 3 days passed and I still waited if they are ok or I need to cancel. The 5th one I texted with canceling. After more 16 days I got answer that the person hasn’t been active on forums. 
IF you make a request WHY ARE YOU NOT ACTIVE???
And I didn’t have another contact way so

This. Exactly. At least give another way of communication if you’re not active. Most artists are really busy

if you think its slowing your requests or proccess of doing other requests i think you should cancel but you never know what theyre doing behind the screen. like i said before, put a deadline and say it to the user (like you have one week until i cancel due to lack of replies etc) just incase even if they dont reply
