If you’re from the UK please help 🙏🏼

Basically, I have a character who is black. Okay? Yes. So, if this character was born in the United Kingdom, would they have an English accent even though they are black? This is probably such a ignorant question but I’m so lost rn 🥲.

ALSO, what would their ethnicity, race and nationality be? Would it be like… African American, Black and English? Lmao I’m so confused

@theaepy, Nationality is sometimes used to mean ethnicity , although the two are technically different. People can share the same nationality but be of different ethnic groups and people who share an ethnic identity can be of different nationalities.

The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. With the exception of England, each of these countries has its own parliament.

Corresponding Locations =

  1. Scotland
  2. Northern Ireland
  3. Wales
  4. North East
  5. North West
  6. Yorkshire and the Humber
  7. West Midlands
  8. East Midlands
  9. South West
  10. South East
  11. East England
  12. Greater London

Hope this helps a little (:

If they are African- African British or Black British. Though there are more than African British black people in the UK.
A lot of black people you can tell they are black a lot of the time just by their voice (not necessarily the way they speak) this counts for a lot of different races. If their parents are natively from a country in Africa or another continent they may have picked up some of their parent’s way of speaking. But as aforementioned there are a lot of different accents all over the UK and England. I am White African British- which is a biracial mix of British and African. A lot of black British people I know do dress differently also- they may wear do-rags for example.
EDIT: A do-rag should so be added as a clothing option though :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Yes, if they were born in the UK, they would have a British accent, but as to what type it would depend on where they were raised as an accent is picked up over time as you grow up.

Certain regions have different strengths of accents and even their own dialect, so make sure to research properly where the character is from if you don’t know anything about the place beforehand.

Irrespective of race, color, ethnicity, it’s most common that someone would have the accent of the country they’ve spent most of their younger years in, for others it can be different. An example is that my brother was born aboard, but he moved to Australia when he was 14, he’s now 37 (still living in Australia, he’s an Aussie national/citizen so his ethnicity and nationality are totally different) and he sounds like a native Australian even though his ethnicity is not of white European decent nor Aboriginal (Indigenous Australian). So if your character was born in the UK and raised there for quite some time, I’m very confident that they’d have a British accent but it’s up to you. Some people actually pick up an accent of a country they’ve only stayed in for a few years and others maintain their accent throughout their lives no matter where they move to or for how long. :woman_shrugging:t3:
Your character’s ethnicity is whatever you choose/whatever you chose for your character’s parents too.

Also wanted to point out that “black” is not limited to African or African-American. Black characters can also be Mauri, Indigenous Australian, Papa New Guinean, Torres Strait Islander etc etc. (:
