miserable town
The girl, about four-teen in age walked to school.
Down the game board in others eyes.
She gagged at the sight of a bunny who probably died from starvation. The grass crunched under her foot as she left the sidewalk. She looked up at the cemetery on the way to school. There was always someone there, whether it was a family or someone over suspicious. The girl knew better than to go there.
Everyday she was reminded at school it could be her next. But, the thought comforted her. She even welcomed it. Nobody talked to her, on purpose and everyone knew it. She didn’t mind it, and they soon found out she didn’t either.
One day, as she sat in class, the boy with bright blonde hair didn’t show up. But the janitor sure made sure to sanitize his seat. She didn’t care much for him. But what really crossed her mind was the note that fell out of the janitors pocked. With a red thumb print on it. She subtlety grabbed it and put it in her pocket, which contained two awfully long shoe laces.
As the girl sat alone at her lunch table, she carefully removed the note. And opened it up. A drawing of an olive tree and an olive tree leaf fell out. The drawing was charcoal, the most color she had seen all day. She also knew where the only olive tree was.
After school, she walked behind the building.
To see the most alive thing she has seen in years, an olive tree. She walked up to the tree, and touched it. She heard footsteps, and soon saw the janitor.
He handed her a name tag, red with blood. It was for the cemetery. “You’re playing a dangerous game, kid.” He said, with a crooked smile.
The girl accepted it, with a new purpose she felt.
