Is this culture appropriation?

A few days ago, I saw this episode story where the author has shown this one character wearing bindi. However that character is clearly not Indian. I think she was using the bindi as some bullet mark or something.
I really don’t want something, that is so important to my culture, to be used as a bullet injury or scar. Especially when I have never seen my mother without a bindi.

But I also feel I am overreacting. I really don’t wanna be one of those toxic ass reader who rants over everything.

So should I talk to the author about it or not?

How you’re feeling about this is absolutely valid. It is important to your culture, so if I were you I would say it to the author and educate them a bit about why it is disrespectful. Just make sure that when you send the message that it can’t be seen in any way as toxic (or anything else negative).

You’re not overracting. It’s clearly offensive. Bindis are not just some random accessory that could be used here and there. There’s a point women wear bindis.

There’s no harm in doing so, it’s good to educate people.

I think that you feeling some kind of way is okay. No one can say you can’t feel any type of way after using something that is a mark of your culture, and make it into something totally different. At the end of the day, you are entitled to your own feelings.

so I am not Indian. but I am gonna leave my opinions anyway

  1. epiode have limited stuff, and we gotta use what we have. now personally I wouldnt use a bindi as a bullet hole, thats a bit weird, but I had a few people complain to me about using a scarf(SCARF not a hijab) as a hood, because regligios reason, its not a hijab.

2 maybe the author didnt think about it, they could be young or shelterd.

3 your not overreacting, we all hate to see something close to us been represented wrong.

4, of course you can try and contact the author, though it may not do anything because some people dont care, but if you do reach out try and be friendly. you usally come longer with that.

Yea, I definitely think you should talk to the author about it. Using a bindi as a bullet hole is a yikes from me :grimacing: Maybe suggest they use an overlay instead?
