Let's Clear Up the Confusion on Racism

I feel guilty making posts like these because they have the potential of becoming an absolute sh*tshow the mods have to clean up. And i know it’s annoying for the mods to deal with lol. I really dont want things to escalate, so please stay within the guidelines, stay on topic, and be nice. If you disagree, that’s okay. State your opinions in a civil manner or make another thread on this subject. I wont hesitate to @/Sydney_H to close the thread if it gets too serious. I really dont want drama, i just want to educate anyone who is confused (and i’m seeing a lot of confusion).

What is Racism?

Racism is a pretty touchy and (sometimes) taboo topic to a lot of people. Anyone can have racial prejudice and anyone can be the subject of racial prejudice. However, not everyone can face racism– which is racial prejudice plus power. For example, someone might have misconstrued, negative ideas about your race HOWEVER if those prejudices doesn’t have a negative systematic or economic effect on you, you are not the subject of racism.

Now, if you’re thinking, “Wait, I never learned that racism was racial prejudice +power!”, then that’s okay! Before quarantine, most people used a very broad and succinct definition of racism. A definition that insinuated that anyone who thought they were better than you because of the basis of your race meant that you were a victim of racism. Even though it was more widely used, this broad definition hurts minorities that face more damaging forms of racism. It equated the form of ‘racism’ that majorities can face as the same as ones as minorities. And that mindset was harmful. It trivialized serious forms of racism that systematically affected racial minorities in ways majorities will never experience. And that’s why-- when talking about racism-- it’s important that we emphasize that Racism = Racial Prejudice + Power

How White People Benefit the Most from Racism:

In a society where white people are at the top of the social hierarchy, white people benefits the most from a system that puts down other racial groups while uplifting their own. It’s why beauty standards are centered around euro-centrism and white skin, why black and indigenous people are more likely to be k*lled by police, why minorities have lower employment rates, etc.
Here is a report on an in-depth history of structural racism in the U.S. and how it disadvantages racial minorities today

What is White Privilege?

White Privilege – inherent advantages possessed by a white person on the basis of their race in a society characterized by racial inequality and injustice.

DISCLAIMER: Having white privilege does not mean you don’t struggle or that you can’t go through anything bad in your life. It just means that you don’t go through struggles on the basis of your race.

Why Should We Specifically Hold White People Accountable?

If anyone has the ability to change the change the system, it’s the people that the system was specifically built for: white people. They have the most privilege and power over any other racial group, so it’s very important that they become more knowledgeable in subjects like these. There’s a lot of white people who don’t know they have white privilege or they have very misconstrued ideas on what racism is. So it’s important we direct this stuff specifically at them. This isn’t an attack on them. Not all white people are racist. However, this is a white issue only white people can fix. Ignoring the fact that this is a white issue and saying, “well, anyone can be racist”, is ignoring a deeper and more systematic issue at hand.

White Fragility:

White Fragility – discomfort and defensiveness on the part of a white person when confronted by information about racial inequality and injustice.

This is a common reaction by some white people when faced with these conversations. In fact, if you wanna learn more, i think you should definitely read this.

White Guilt:

White Guilt – remorse or shame felt by a white person with respect to racial inequality and injustice.

White guilt is also a common experience for some people, and (for some) it’s the first step towards improvement! However, don’t shift the blame on yourself and feel bad after educating yourself on racial issues. It’s best to confide in other white people who have or are experiencing the same thing. :slightly_smiling_face::sunflower:

Anyway, this will probably be my final word on this topic, unless i need to clear up on some things. This is too mentally exhausting for me :skull: And im sorry if i feel annoying to you for making a topic on this.

P.S. I should have specified that most of the stuff here regards to most countries with white people as the majority. Different cultures regard race differently, and different countries function differently when it comes to systematic racism.

Well said
I wish I could do something about it but our system is built for white straight men to get their way
So as a female I can barely do anything to change it I can barely get treated the same. The minute I mentioned politics I just get shut down

Normally by straight white men saying no balls not opinion sometimes joking sometimes not
