I completely understand! I suppose if I read a story like that though it wouldn’t chalk down to a cliche in my book. To me cliches are defined more by poor character foundation/development and a rocky plot/storyline within the stereotypical cliche (eg: the bad boy i described earlier with no substance or ability to create room for a plot twist)
Agree with this 100%
I hope that my responses to all of you do not sound argumentative… ha! I am simply trying to engage with you all on your great opinions… (I was reading my responses, and it’s hard to distinguish sometimes what intentions are via digital alphabet! lol. Just wanted to clarify I am enjoying all the responses, and am in no way trying to convince, argue or debate… cause reading my responses, it sounds like I am…
I’m not, I promise! )
Not at all - you’re actually being really… insightful I suppose?
Phew! Good. I didnt want anyone to think I was being an intentional Know-it-all… HA!

Thanks! I am enjoying the conversations
I just would like to quote you on this because this is true. To be honest, sometimes fiction stories can be very interesting than reality is; I admit. Majority of people want to escape the real world because they want something that can actually soothe them and make them happy.
I admittedly had to look up Mare Barrow… ![]()

…Something hardly ever seen in Episode stories cannot be overrated.
I think she was referring to the “hype” regarding the “importance of realism” in correspondence to the discussions revolving around what makes a “good story.” In which case, it is rated highly among authors (based on the opinions expressed outwardly) hence, she feels the high rating is undeserved, therefore, overrated.) But, yeah… I agree. lots of stories don’t have realism.
Correct me if my understanding of your opinion was incorrect @AnimeOtome
Personally, I don’t think its more “bad boy cliche’s suck because they’re unrealistic (etc.)” but the fact that we see just this one plot line everywhere that these stories blend together and don’t seem to stand alone. Readers are going to scroll through stories, see a cliche cover and title and ignore it because its something they’ve seen countless times. People who do use cliches to their advantage and create big plot twists are ignored because their stories look to be the same as generic cliches.
My point is: cliches (an unoriginal thought) have been used so much across every genre, that its becoming harder to tell which story is going to be worth your time. Therefore, people have just begun to hate them.
I don’t think that’s the issue. Everything you write about can potentially be real, under certain circumstances. I think the main issue with a lot of stories is that events that happen there aren’t realistic even in the terms of the story’s own rules. You can put “illogical” instead of unrealistic.
You would be surprised. Love triangles are more typical than some might think.
I’m also not sure that it’s something everyone would like to happen to them. The thing it’s just exciting, it’s dramatic. Who wants to read about “lived happily ever after” with boring breakfast conversations? We want some kind of drama, action, emotions.
It can happen. It is realistic. I’m talking now through my own experience.
The thing most authors don’t get about “bad boys” is that they are bad for some reason, and that reason can’t be handled just by meeting some pretty girl. Guy/girl has to realize the problem, then work on it, making mistakes along the way. It’s not that they change. They just learn to deal with their issues in a non-self-destructive way. But most authors go down the easy road, and just change them without any motivation (real motivation). Just because of the girl. It’s not how it happens.
But yeah again. We all like to read about things that never happened to us, although we wish they would. We just want them to be portrayed realistically in terms of author’s created universe.
Are you sure about it
? forgot to add it ![]()
I mean, people can change. So, I believe it is realistic that a bad boy changes. ![]()

I agree. Most readers want to self-insert in stories, especially Episode where their main attraction is precisely that. There’s a reason why transformation stories / love triangle stories are the most popular on this app.
However, we do need to show realism in character interaction. If Character A just starts bawling their eyes out over nothing, readers will get a reality check.
Yeah, no, thanks xD I like to keep some things to myself
: ‘’’’’ d
okie
When I read those stories I don’t really believe the story author is writing. I can’t really say that I hate those bad boy stories, but from my point of view, they are all the same…Bad boy is disrespectful-then mc gets close to him and boom he would die for her.
So I would like to see more original stories with this pattern.
Realistic, as in, is it common or typical.
Sure, it “could happen” but not really typical.
For example… EVERY horror movie… The stupid flashlight goes out. Is that realistic? No. COULD it happen? Sure. Get what I’m saying?
Im speaking in terms of chance (as mentioned above) In REAL LIFE, its not really realistic to expect a bad guy to change his ways because you are just so darn charming…lol. It COULD happen though… lol, just not very realistic.
I got it
Good. lol. I write long explanations …sorry. (I cant help it.)
I just thought when you said that it can’t be “realistic”, you meant to say that it can’t happen in real life
, so…
