Basecilly, I want to know if you like when the story starts when your LI (love-interest) is working or if he’s in school!

It depends, if the mc herself in school or work.
For example if its a high school setting then I wouldn’t mind either work (same or somewhat similar age) or school. But if its in an adult setting, I think it would be weird and wrong if an adult would be with a student (high school or bellow) , I think if its college then it should be fine since college students are practically adults.

To be honest, it depends!
I like stories where the LI is like atleast a year or two older than the mc herself, so that I can enjoy the wholesome moments of them spending time together before he goes off to graduate/work at his job. :’)

I prefer work, or at least university, bc the high school trope is getting old

I prefer when they are in college, but I don’t usually mind. It also depends on how well it is planned and how realistic it is.
