I have a question for any Americans: are school-mandated popularity contests a real thing? Do prom kings and queens exist outside of teen movies?

Yeah, Homecoming/Prom King/Queen is a really big thing in US high schools. We all like it, though; it’s kind of a part of high school, despite its flaws.
My school this year is actually renaming it Prom Royalty so that non-binary people can be elected, which I think is a step in the right direction.

yea, but in my school, the students don’t vote for who is prom king/queen. the caterers and workers decide who the king/queen are by who is dancing the most/having the most fun, meaning literally anyone could win.

Yep. My school did it and it was 100% a popularity contest. The kids that happened to win my senior year didn’t fit the Episode stereotype of the popular kids, though. They were both popular because they were pretty nice to people.
I kind of hate that open shirt-jacket combo. It almost looks like he had his shirt pinned open for it to stay that wide.
