Hey guys, I’ve been writing a story with an Albino Indian MC, and I wanted to be able to let the readers choose her name. However, I also wanted to give the MC a name that has a meaning to the story without eliminating the choice of the reader picking their name, if that makes sense. I wanted it to be my choice, as well as the readers’.
The only way to do this that I could think of is to choose a list of names that has a different meaning but makes sense to the story, and then give those names as a choice to the readers. Whichever name they pick will change the story a little bit in some way. I have six names so far: Akira, Ananya, Irya, Abhi, Lavi, and Daxa.
I made this thread to ask if there was an alternative way to do this rather than with a choice. Even if there was, would it be a good idea? Has it been done before?
If anyone thinks it’s a good idea, could you also recommend some names that you’d like to have?
NOTE: The character follows Hinduism and is an Indian. So, although it doesn’t have to be, it’d be better if the recommended names have some kind of background to them.
Thank you for your time, and I hope I’ve explained everything right.
Background of the MC and her personality:
EDIT: A bit of background on the MC; The MC is someone who has always been alone and segregated from the people of her village because of who she is. She’s albino, and people were convinced that her family were witches and have cursed her at birth (this happens in real life. People born with skin conditions like vitiligo, albinism, or even other disabilities like cerebral palsy have gotten killed BY THEIR FAMILIES in a raging fire as they were considered cursed and a “bad luck”. Although this happens rarely today, it was really common a couple of years back and still happens in rural areas without consequences, speaking from experience).
The MC, however, disliked everyone there anyway and didn’t want to be included. She despised everyone for murdering her innocent best friend in front of her, named Tania, who happened to have vitiligo.
This was them:
She has one other living friend in the village, whose name is Mallikai, and is a victim of forced child marriage. Mallikai was forced to bear children when her body was weak, which resulted in multiple miscarriages. Everyone that the MC cared about were mistreated in the village, so it’s obvious why she doesn’t want to be associated with the rest of them.
Now, for her personality: she’s an adventurous person who loves art. She’d go up to a treehouse in a forest away from the village every day to paint (she built the treehouse with Tania, so it was very special to her). She’s sentimental about things that mean something to her and wants to live a life as free as possible. She’d rather be by herself, with Mallikai, or with an animal.
She has never liked the idea of love, as she has been told by her parents that nobody would love a “freak” like her. She believed nobody would really love her for everything that she is as she has constantly been told that. She wasn’t against love, she does believe that it exists, but just not in the form of romance for her.
Basically, she’s an isolophilia, someone who loves to be alone. She loves art, exploring, and animals. If she loves someone, she’d go to the ends of the world for them. If someone did a tiny favor for her, she’d return it with a million.
PS: [SPOILER] If you’re wondering why she wasn’t killed too, it’s because her brother ran the village. But when she was 19, her brother passed away, and the new leader sentences her to death. But she runs away with Mallikai.
If I add anything else to this, it’d be a huge spoiler, so I’d rather leave them out. Let me know if you need anything else though!
