I am a relatively new writer on Episode, and there is one thing above coding that has bugged me with writing a story on Episode: the genre classification. What genre classification you may ask? Well, every story is given a genre that places your story amongst millions that fit into a certain theme. These themes include Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Romance, and Thriller. Now at first, these genre’s fit everything in my mind that Episode has ever had to deal with. However, that all changed once I started to write my own story. You see, my story revolves around a young writer, who has to navigate Brooklyn New York in order to rediscover his passion and discover what makes him uniquely human in a sea of ambitious souls. So naturally, I put the story in drama. It is a dramatization of any creative mind’s journey ad finding themselves in an inflated cutthroat industry. But then I started to think. That dramatization is funny. Matter of fact, the story itself is a split between melancholy scenes and funny cutaways that go hand in hand with every human’s experience. (or at least I try to make the story a nice half and half mix). Then it dawned on me there are also Future Plans that Will Not be Spoiled that would change the story into a mystery.
Please, creative minds of Episode Forum, help me figure out what to make of this mess of a dilemma. I don’t want to box my story completely into a genre that it isn’t. It also begs to question why isn’t there a Slice of Life genre? I’ve read some great Slice of Life-esque stories that revolve around the human condition and the journey of one person through things such as College, law firms, you name it (don’t actually name them those are the only two shh).

I gotta agree with you, there definitely should be a Slice of Life genre. By the info you gave about your story, it seems that it’s a sequence of events where the situation is always changing (correct me if I’m wrong) and Slice of Life would be perfect for it. I’d say just keep it in Drama (I’m not sure what else would work) but I’ll definitely keep this in mind for whenever Episode comes out with an update.

The situation is in fact always changing, yes that’s exactly the issue. It’s like a coming of age story, with a new story or situation popping up and teaching him a new part of himself and revealing what type of person the reader has fostered throughout the read (i.e. a compassionate soul, a backstabber, etc. it makes sense to me in my head, but the coding part of it is a nightmare to try and maintain). I’ve been contemplating about whether to put it as a drama or comedy, however, reading the first two chapters so far (or what I have written so far that is) it feels too heavy to really be a comedy YK. Ty for keeping my idea of a new genre in mind!

Never even thought about Subgenres. Those could also help with the entire issue. The only thing is I would be hesitant of people putting a story in a sub-genre because one scene correlated to comedy, or they had a spooky episode for Halloween, etc., etc. The only thing I fear with sub-genres are they would make some genre’s filled to the brim with stories that probably don’t have much to do with the theme, and people just tacking sub genre’s on for the sake of spreading their story instead of really thinking about what sub-genre their story would fit into. In general, Episode is in need of diversification, and some new genres would really add some new flair and get some creative juices flowing for people to really stretch the bounds writing wise and take these stories to new extremes.

I mean I guess if u don’t know what genre to put it in or it fits into more then one, in the description you can just put like comedy/drama or whatever it is
I think the drama genre is the safest bet for your story on the app but you can also list sub-genres or call it a “dramedy” when you advertise your story (which is what I do). Episode might give us the option to have more genres or list sub-genres on the app sometime in future but for now — I’d definitely go with drama if I were you.

first off, you’re very well spoken-
I think episode should integrate more genres that match the types of media descriptions you might see next to a movie. Like for example, the new marvel tv show “WandaVision” is under “romance” but also under “action”. I think if episode made their genres more specific or just added more, it would also add the opportunity for more authors to be seen- more genres, more places in the #1 spot for that genre, thus making it easier for hard working creators to have a platform to be recognized
