Before your think about different character please make sure you have a beginning middle and end for your story!
Obviously with your story the MC and LI need to go through some type of character development by like the middle or the end of the story.
In my opinion there are three types of characters in a story.
◦ The first one being the MC/s, LI, and the antagonist. The story is mainly about them. They need to have a backstory. I don’t think I need explain this one lol.
◦ The second kind are ppl like the best friend, the mom, the boss, mean girls, landlord. Basically anyone that the MC and LI talks to. The story is not about them but their actions and/or side stories HAVE to impact the MC and LI some type of way. Directly or indirectly.
◦ The last kind are the random ppl. These characters are unpredictable and are randomly added to the story whenever. Their only job is to start drama and make a mess. NOT PLOT TWISTS. They could be recurring characters or in an episode or 2. And they should never be in 5-6 chapters or more, because then they’re secondary characters. These characters need no type of background story. And they should not impact the main plot.
The dos and don’t of writing characters.
◦ Beware of the “best friend syndrome”. This means that you’ve created a character that is the best friend of one of the MC, but the BF has no personality. The only reason why the BF is apart of the story is because you wanted one. They don’t impact the story and they only support the character. Doesn’t say much only just there. Especially if the Bf is a POC or gay. It’s so stereotypical.
◦ Random plot twist. I don’t needa explain what a plot twist is. But if you’re gonna create a plot twist make sure it makes sense. In order for a twist to happen, it has to be hinted at multiple times. I’ve seen shows and movies where they try to do a twist but it’s so randomly and it raises more questions than answers. And then they get left unanswered at the end. If you want I could talk about why a plot twist doesn’t work more later.
◦ If your story has BAD people, and you talking about BAD things that the BAD people have done. And you have to deal with all these BAD things and BAD people that are in your way to get to the main villain. Expect the readers to see them as BAD people. So at the end when the Mc has to face these BAD people, it need to be satisfying. It cannot be something short and easy. It’s something big. I’ve seen shows where the BAD ppl were basically Nazis, and they ended up not even fighting, and instead just used forgiveness as a ending. (Steven Universe) Don’t do that because it will tell a lot about you as a person. These ppl are BAD for a reason. Do not sell short!
◦ Character developments are key when writing. Not only the main characters have to go through it but a lot of the secondary ones as well (not all). It’s best for those characters (not all) to have a side story. One way is to bring a random character to affect the secondary character! And see how it changes the story a bit.
◦ Another thing you should stay away is the same personality within your characters. Meaning that all characters are basically the same people with different fonts. Makes the story boring when all the characters are the same. When created a person with a certain personality stick with it.
◦ Same face syndrome! When created friends and random characters avoid using the same customized people. There’s a way where you could create random generated people. I’ve seen too many mafia stories where everyone looks the same. It gets confusing.
◦ Don’t do that dumb height difference thing. It’s cringy. Trust me the readers do not care about the height difference.
◦ Do not make your characters unrealistic. Everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect. Your characters should have flaws. Think of them as real people! And make their choices have some type of impact on them! No one likes the perfect characters where everything they do is perfect.
I hope I didn’t missing anything. But please add anything in the comments if I did!! If you’re thinking about making your own story these tips could be helpful!
