Need help with advance directing — overlays

#1

Hello, everyone!

I hope you are all great!

I am trying to make quite a complex animation so I could definitely use some help. Here is what I am trying to do:

As you can see, the animation is not very smooth as there is this… not sure how to scribe it…like a click before it works.

I assume this happens because I have to shift overlays to the right position before I start rotating them. For some reason, when I start rotating overlays, they all jump outside the box even though initially they are in their correct places. I have no idea why this is happening and why they don’t rotate around the spot where I have placed them initially. All the leg parts are uploaded separately and are centred in the png.

Do you have any idea as to how I could fix this?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi.
Can I see your script code? Should be much easier to help you then.

Have you taken into consideration that the overlays automatically shift/get new coordinates when you rotate them?
You need to rotate, then move the overlay to where you want them and use those coordinates instead of the original ones when placing the overlay.

Overlays are pains in the ass.

#4

That’s the problem here. I think the click happens because I am putting overlays back in place (otherwise they are rotating God knows where). Thank you very much for your help!

Here’s the script:

INT. WHITE with CAMELBODY with CAMELFRONTLEGSUP with CAMELFRONTLOW with CAMELFRONTLOWEST
&zoom reset AND overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLEGSBOTTOM shifts to -24 -93 AND overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLEGSBOTTOM scales to 1.000 1.000
&overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELBODY shifts to -3 81 AND overlay CAMELBODY moves to layer 1
&overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELBODY scales to 1.000 1.000
&overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLEGSUP shifts to -27 0 AND overlay CAMELFRONTLEGSUP moves to layer 2
&overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLEGSUP scales to 1.000 1.000
&overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLOW shifts to -19 -81
&overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLOWEST shifts to -24 -120
#@overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLOW shifts to 155 204 AND overlay 5459179075796992_CAMELFRONTLEGSUP shifts to 150 273

I. JUST. DON’T. HAVE. THE PATIENCE. TO DO. THIS…:dizzy_face::dizzy_face::dizzy_face:
Kudos to you!

#6

Lol, I guess I like the challenge! Thank you!

#7

WTF Alex?! HOWWWWWWW???
I nearly threw my laptop out the window trying to get a freaking table in the scene today. And meanwhile you’re attempting that!!

#8

Alex try sizing them 500x500. That way, there wont be new coordinates when you rotate

#9

LOOOOOOOOL :joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:

I guess I like the challenge, I am a bit of a nerd :see_no_evil::see_no_evil::see_no_evil:

#10

You mean size each overlay to 500x500?

#11

I can relate…
I just can’t seem to get a magic ball in a damn characters hand and this just gave me a headache to even look at…How did he/she even did that?

#12

Yes, thats what Ive been doing whole my life :joy:

#13

And the anchor point you use is 0.5 0.5?

#14

That’s so clever

#15

Yep. The overlay in tutorials is 497x483 and it works perfectly for all of them

#16

I am annoyed by that click! I wish we could place anchor points ourselves!

#17

Happy to help. :upside_down_face:

  1. Don’t forget the DAY or NIGHT at the background title.

  2. Instead of putting the coordinates for the overlay in the script flow, add the original positions to the overlay names in the background title.
    ex
    INT. WHITE - DAY with CAMELBODY to 1.0 -3 81 in zone 1 at layer 1

That will save you time and make it easier for the SE to read the code,

  1. Don’t forget pauses when using &.

<3

#18

Aha! I will try that, thank you so much, TT!

:blue_heart::blue_heart::blue_heart:

#19

I will try that, thank you very much! What pauses are you talking about though?

#20

& has no pauses, so the SE will continue to read the next line of the script without stopping. So if you need time to do something, say for ex a time shift you need to add that time with a pause.

ex
@pause for 3.0

Else the SE will just continue into the next move/animation and the scene will get F* upped.

Another thing, when taking on this type of project be sure to add a time frame for each overlay animation, even if it’s just 0.
